For Zeng it’s the third time he’s earned the title of All-American in his career. Last season he did so on one-meter and platform, the event in which he won a national championship. In terms of All-America honors he’s one-for-one this season, with a chance to do so on three-meter tomorrow evening and platform on Saturday. During prelims on Thursday Zeng posted the fourth-highest score among the 47 divers to earn a spot in the evening session. Once he got there he put up a score of 327.00.
The foursome of McHugh, Barone, Lense, and Fleagle, who all set the school record in the 400 medley relay last month at Big Ten Championships, all combined for a time of 3:06.59 during finals, which was just a touch faster than their prelims time of 3:06.72. For Barone and Lense this is the first All-America honor they have earned in what is also their first trip to NCAA Championships. For Fleagle and McHugh this marks their seventh All-America accolade.
Fleagle was exceptionally fast on Thursday; his 100 freestyle splits were 42.18 during prelims and 42.14 during finals, both of which are the fastest 100 freestyle times by a Buckeye ever. Barone split 52.36 during finals while swimming breaststroke, nearly besting his school record time of 52.26 that he set at Big Ten Championships.
Also competing for Ohio State on Thursday were Brayden Seal and Joey Long, who swam in the 500 freestyle. Seal touched the wall at 4:20.97 and Long did so at 4:25.22.
Friday will be yet another full day of competition in Indianapolis, with prelims beginning at 10:00 a.m. ET and finals picking back up at 6:00 p.m. ET. The following events will be contested: 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, three-meter, and 200 medley relay.
