COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State welcomed USF into the OSU Varsity Tennis Center on Friday evening and sent the Bulls away with a 6-1 defeat. The Buckeyes improve to 7-0 on the season.
Ohio State got off to a quick start in doubles to get the first point for the Buckeyes. Martin Joyce and Hugo Di Feo won a comfortable set 6-1 against Peter Bertran and Justin Roberts. Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen followed up with a 6-2 win over Sasha Gozun and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy to clinch the point.
Some entertaining singles matches ensued, as four different three-set matches took place. Torpegaard followed up on his doubles victory by winning the first singles match for the Buckeyes, defeating Gozun 6-3, 6-3 on court one.
Freshman JJ Wolf faced his first ranked opponent of the season in No. 77 Peter Bertran. After losing the first set 6-3, Wolf dominated, winning the next two sets 6-1, 6-1 for the Buckeye’s third point. Martin Joyce clinched the victory for the Buckeyes, getting a break each set to win 6-4, 6-4 against USF’s Pierre Luquet, to put the Buckeyes up 4-0.
The teams opted to play out the rest of the singles matches. Tied at 6-2, 6-7 (1-7), Pollanen played a super tie-breaker for the third set, losing a close one 12-10. Seelig got the Buckeye’s second comeback of the day, losing the first set 6-4, but rolling in the next two sets 6-2, 6-1 over Kalyuzhnyy. The last match of the day, Di Feo against Roberts, was another close three-setter. Di Feo emerged victorious, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, to make the final score 6-1 in favor of the Buckeyes.
Next up, Ohio State faces No. 15 Kentucky in what figures to be another tough matchup. The match will once again take place in the OSU Varsity Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m.
