COLUMBUS, Ohio – In front of a very nice Friday evening crowd at the Ohio State Varsity Tennis Center, No. 3 Ohio State beat its first ranked opponent of the season, downing No. 15 Kentucky 4-1. The Buckeyes continue to maintain their undefeated season with a record of 8-0, and have only given up two points on the season.
The Buckeyes started off quickly on the doubles side. Hugo Di Feo and Martin Joyce were first to finish their set with a victory of 6-1. Matt Mendez and Hunter Tubert weren’t far behind with a 6-2 win to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, the Wildcats tied it up when Joyce was defeated by Nils Ellefsen 6-4, 6-2. Torpegaard put OSU back in the lead with a victory over Ryo Matsumura 6-3, 6-1. Pollanen got the Buckeyes’ third point with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Trey Yates. The last three matches all came down to the third set.
Redshirt freshman Kyle Seelig stepped it up in the third set and was able to bring home the win for the Buckeyes, winning four straight games in the third set to defeat Enzo Wallart 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Both of the matches on courts 2 and 3 went unfinished, but looked like they could have gone either way. JJ Wolf was able to come back from a tiebreaker loss in the first set to take the second set 6-1, and was on serve in the third set at 4-5. Hugo Di Feo had split the first two sets 6-3, 5-7 against Beck Pennington, and had just gotten a break in the third set. The score was 5-5 when the match was ended.
It was a great win for OSU, but its weekend is not yet over as they prepare to face No. 10 Georgia on Sunday at Noon. The match will close the season-opening home stand for the Buckeyes who won’t return to the VTC until early March.
