COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 19 Ohio State women’s gymnastics team won its third-consecutive dual meet with a 196.075-195.800 victory over No. 24 West Virginia Saturday afternoon at St. John Arena.
“Lexy (Mattern) has been a rock for us this season,” Carey Fagan, Ohio State head coach, said. “She’s so mentally tough and has really stepped up into being someone we can count on in all four events. We have areas we want to improve heading into our senior meet next week and I think we learned some things tonight that will help us down the stretch.”
The Buckeyes began the meet with a 48.925 on vault. For the third time this season, Alexis Mattern tied her career-best 9.900 to tie for first while Jamie Stone posted a 9.800.
Ohio State moved to bars in the second rotation, tallying a 49.050. Mattern earned a career-high 9.875 to take the event title while Kaitlyn Hofland recorded a 9.850 for a second-place finish.
After two rotations, Ohio State held a narrow 97.975-97.950 lead over West Virginia.
The Buckeyes then posted a 48.900 on balance beam in the third rotation as Taylor Harrison tied her season-best 9.875 to take first in the event.
Ohio State wrapped up the meet with a 49.025 on floor exercise. Mattern earned a 9.900 for a second-place finish while Harrison posted a career-high 9.875 to finish third.
Mattern won the all-around title with a 39.375.
The Buckeyes welcome nationally-ranked Denver to St. John Arena on Senior Night next Friday.
