COLUMBUS, Ohio –No. 3 Ohio State rolled over the No. 10 Georgia Bulldogs 4-0 to continue their undefeated run to open the season. The Buckeyes win their ninth straight home match to earn a 9-0 record. The Bulldogs lose their third straight, putting their record at 3-3.
The match was hard-fought in doubles, as the Buckeyes managed to earn the doubles point, but lost their first doubles match of the season. Hugo Di Feo and Martin Joyce gave the Buckeyes a strong start, as they won the first match of the day, defeating Paul Oosterban and Walker Duncan 6-2. The Bulldogs tied it up again when Matt Mendez and Hunter Tubert were defeated by Nathan Ponwith and Wayne Montgomery 6-2.
The last doubles match came down to Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen, who were facing Georgia’s Robert Loeb and Jan Zielinski. After each side traded breaks, the score was 4-4 at deuce. After a tough point, Torpegaard and Pollanen earned the break, and served out to win their match 6-4, clinching the doubles point for the Buckeyes.
“It was a tight match which it always is with Georgia,” said Ohio State Director of Tennis Ty Tucker. “The doubles point was tight and then in singles, we came out and got on them. We then let a couple of things slip away and you have to credit Georgia. They have a lot of pride, great tradition and eight national titles so anytime you can beat a team like that, it’s a great day.”
The Buckeyes looked their best all season in singles on Sunday. Pollanen was the first to win for the Buckeyes, defeating Oosterban 6-2, 6-4. Torpegaard then put the Buckeyes up 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Montgomery on court one. In both sets, Torpegaard won the set off a break point, including a stunning backhand passing shot in the first. Freshman Kyle Seelig sealed the deal for OSU for the second-straight match with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Duncan, including winning two breaks to come from behind in the second set.
The unfinished matches either appeared either in favor of the Buckeyes, or were up for grabs. JJ Wolf was down a set against Emil Reinberg, but was on serve in the second 5-7, 3-4. Di Feo split the first two sets against Ponwith 6-3, 4-6. Joyce won the first set in a tiebreaker against Zielinski, winning the tiebreaker 8-6 after being down 6-4. He was up a break in the second set at 4-3.
The Buckeyes will try to build off this huge victory as they prepare for Penn State on Wednesday and the ITA National Indoor Championships on Friday. This will be the first away match of the season for OSU, as they look to continue their undefeated season.
