STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The third-ranked Ohio State men’s tennis team opened Big Ten play on Wednesday with a 4-0 sweep of Penn State in State College. The win improves the Buckeyes to 10-0 on the season.
The Buckeyes opened match the same way they have every match this season by taking the doubles point. Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen raced to a 6-1 victory over Constant De La Bassetiere and Christian Lakoseljac on court 1. The point was then secured by Matt Mendez and Hunter Tubert on court three as they bested Gabriel Nemeth and Christos Antonopoulos 6-2. Hugo Di Feo and Martin Joyce were tied 3-3 in their set with Aws Laaribi and Ben Lieb on court 2.
In singles, Di Feo picked up his 11th win of the season with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Antonopoulos to make the score 2-0. Torpegaard followed suit by winning his team-leading 14th match of the year with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over De La Bassetiere on court one.
The final point of the match came from freshman JJ Wolf who claimed his first Big Ten singles victory over Lakoseljac 7-6, 6-1. Pollanen was on the verge of victory as well as he was leading Laaribi 6-2, 5-3 when the match was clinched. With only four courts available, the other two singles matches had yet to start.
The Buckeyes have now won 12-straight Big Ten matches all by 4-0 sweeps. The next Big Ten match won’t be for over a month when Ohio State hosts Michigan State on March 24 at 6 p.m.
Next up for the Buckeyes will be the ITA National Indoor Team Championships in Charlottesville, Va., this weekend. Ohio State, the No. 3-seed in the tournament, will open on Friday morning against No. 14-seed Oklahoma at 9 a.m.
