COLUMBUS, Ohio –
Ohio State continued their dominant Big Ten campaign defeating Nebraska 4-0 on Sunday at the OSU Varsity Tennis Center.
Ohio State, now 5-0 in the Big Ten, has yet to surrender a single point in conference play. This is the longest streak in head coach Ty Tucker’s tenure at Ohio State, dating back to 1999. The previous high was four-straight sweeps to start Big Ten play in 2009.
In doubles competition, Ralf Steinbach and Hunter Tubert overcame obstacles to claim the first win. Down 0-2, the team went on to win six straight games for a 6-2 defeat of Marc Herrmann and Scott Elsass of Nebraska. Matt Mendez and Hugo Di Feo clinched the point for the Buckeyes by the same score of 6-2 over Andrew Dzulynsky and Bradford Zitsch to put the Buckeyes up 1-0 in the match.
Mikael Torpegaard played excellent tennis to begin singles competition for the Buckeyes. Battling in the first few games against Dusty Boyer, Torpegaard went on to win the set 6-3 and carried his momentum into the second set, rolling 6-0 to put the Buckeyes up 2-0 in the match. Torpegaard is a team-best 16-0 in dual matches this season.
Winning with even more ease, Di Feo bested Nebraska’s Herrmann 6-1, 6-1 to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead. Di Feo is now 16-6 overall on the year and won both singles matches this weekend for the Buckeyes.
The final point came tougher than the previous three for Ohio State. Martin Joyce battled throughout the second set after winning the first 6-4. Down 2-3 early and trading games on and off serve, he came out victorious 6-4 to give the Buckeyes the win and their 20th win on the year. Joyce is now 12-0 on the year in dual matches.
Ohio State has failed to surrender a win to Nebraska in their brief all-time matchup dating back to 2002. The Buckeyes are now 8-0 all-time facing the Cornhuskers.
The Buckeyes go on the road to face No. 19 Kentucky at 3 p.m. on Wednesday to begin a long road campaign. Ohio State returns home next to play Northwestern on April 22.
