COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 4 nationally-ranked Buckeyes claimed a 4-0 victory against No. 60 Iowa for their fourth Big Ten win in four tries.
In the 60th meeting all-time between the two programs, Ohio State cemented their series lead 38-22. Head coach Ty Tucker has never lost to the Hawkeyes, remaining a perfect 18-0.
To begin the match, the Buckeyes quickly rushed out of the gates. On court one, Mikael Torpegaard and Martin Joyce overpowered Jake Jacoby and Lefteris Theodorou of Iowa, winning 6-2. The Court 2 pairing of Ralf Steinbach and Hunter Tubert won by the same score defeating Dominic Patrick and Josh Silverstein, clinching the doubles point and giving the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead.
In singles competition, Steinbach shined. Carrying over his great play in doubles, Steinbach won his first set 6-2, and then failed to drop a game in the second set, defeating Robin Haden 6-2, 6-0 to put the Buckeyes up 2-0.
Hugo Di Feo overcame struggles in the first set in order to win 6-4. He carried the momentum into the second set, also failing to drop a game in the second set, winning 6-0 to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead.
To clinch the match, Herkko Pollanen battled Jonas Larson in the second set after winning the first 6-2. Eventually, Pollanen won the match 6-2, 6-4 giving the Buckeyes their 19th win on the year.
This win marks the 67th straight Big Ten home win for the Buckeyes, the last loss coming on April 11, 2004. Ohio State now moves to 4-0 in Big Ten play this season and 19-2 on the year.
The Buckeyes are back in action Noon on Sunday when they face Nebraska at Outdoor Varsity Tennis Courts.
