Buckeyes 7-4 Winners at No. 6 Michigan – Ohio State Buckeyes

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Ohio State men’s hockey team overcame an early two-goal deficit to post a 7-4 win at No. 6 Michigan Friday in Yost Ice Arena. The Buckeyes, unbeaten in their last four (3-0-1), and Wolverines will close the home-and-home series at 3 p.m. Sunday at Nationwide Arena in Columbus.
The Wolverines led 2-0 8:21 into the game but the Buckeyes scored three times before the end of the period, including a power play goal with 17 seconds remaining, to carry a 3-2 lead into intermission. The Buckeyes scored three goals in the second period, with two in a 22 second span, to lead 6-2 after 40 minutes. Michigan scored the first two goals of the third, including a power play goal on a major at 14:05, but Ohio State held off the Wolverines the rest of the say and sealed the win with an empty net goal.
Thirteen Buckeyes had a point for the second consecutive game. The line of freshmen Brendon Kearney and Dakota Joshua and sophomore Kevin Miller led the way with three goals, as each found the back of the net. Kearney and Miller both added an assist for a two-point night. Freshman Tommy Parran and sophomore Matthew Weis each picked up two assists in the victory. The Buckeyes blocked 28 Wolverine shot attempts, led by freshman defenseman Sasha Larocque with five.

Michigan scored at 3:41 and 8:21 of the first period, with JT Compher tallying on the power play and Alex Kile converting on the rush at 8:21. Joshua scored at 9:43 to put the Buckeyes on the board, assisted by Parran and Kearney, and junior defenseman Josh Healey tied the game at two when his shot from the point got through, assisted by Parran and senior Tyler Lundey. At 19:43 freshman John Wiitala put in a rebound with the Buckeyes on the power play, giving the Buckeyes the lead. Freshman Mason Jobst and Weis assisted on the tally, Wiitata’s fourth goal in four games. Shots were 15-9 in favor of Michigan in the period.
In the second, Miller took a pass from Larocque and beat the Michigan goaltender high to put Ohio State up 4-2 at 8:35. Just 22 seconds later Kearney jammed the puck in from the side of the net, assisted by Miller. At 19:09 junior blueliner Drew Brevig scored from the point on a major power play, with Weis and junior Nick Schilkey assisting. Brevig has scored on the power play each of the last two games and Schilkey extended his point streak to five and his team point lead to 36 (17g, 19a). Ohio State controlled play in the period and outshot the Wolverines, 15-5.
Just 1:40 into the third Michigan’s Tony Calderone scored to end the Buckeyes’ run at six goals. Calderone scored the Wolverines’ next goal at 14:05, converting on a major power play. Ohio State did not allow another goal on the major advantage. Michigan pulled its goalie with time running down and freshman Freddy Gerard was able to gather the puck and bank it off the boards and in to seal the Buckeye victory. Shots were 8-7 in favor of Michigan in the period.
Ohio State outshot Michigan, 31-28, in the game. Buckeye goalie Christian Frey had 24 saves in all 60 minutes. Michigan starter Steve Racine played the first 28:58 and allowed five goals, making 14 saves. He was replaced and Zach Nagelvoort played 30:44, making 10 saves on 11 shots.
Ohio State was 2-for-3 on the power play and Michigan was 2-for-4 with the man advantage.
Postgame Notes
• Schilkey is first for the Buckeyes with 17 goals and 36 points this season, ranking second with 19 assists. He has three goals, seven assists and 10 points in his last four games combined.
• Weis is on a five-game point streak, with two goals and eight assists for 10 points in the stretch.
• Ohio State has scored 24 goals in its last four games, going 3-0-1 in the stretch.
• Parran is on a four-game point streak (1g, 5a, 6p) and all five of his points have come in the last seven games. It was his second career two-assist night and he has five assists in the last three games combined.
• Wiitala, who has a 10-6-16 line this season, is on four-game goal and point streaks.
• Kearney had his first multiple point game as a Buckeye.
• Gerard has a goal in three of the last four games.
