ATHENS, Ga. – Playing outside for the second time this season, the No. 4 Ohio State men’s tennis team had its seven-match win streak snapped with a 4-2 setback at No. 19 Georgia.
The Buckeyes slip to 16-2 on the season with its only other loss this season coming to top-ranked North Carolina.
Sophomore Mikael Torpegaard continued his torrid spring as he downed No. 27 Austin Smith on court one 6-4, 6-2. He improves to 19-2 on the year and has yet to lose in 2016. Torpegaard is a perfect 11-0 at the No. 1 spot this season.
The Buckeyes would lose the doubles point for just the second time this season. Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen were beaten 6-3 by the No. 5 team of Smith and Ben Wagland and Ralf Steinbach and Martin Joyce also fell 6-3 to Paul Oosterbaan and Jan Zielinski.
Torpegaard’s point evened the match at 1-1 but UGA quickly regained the lead as No. 25 Wayne Montgomery topped No. 24 Hugo Di Feo 7-5, 6-3 on court two. The final four singles matches would all go to a third set.
Steinbach rebounded from a first set loss to take the second and third set from No. 120 Walker Duncan to win the match 5-7, 6-2, 7-5. This was Steinbach’s 17th singles win of the season.
Pollanen and Chris Diaz also won the second sets in their matches after losing the first but both would tumble in the third. Pollanen lost 6-2 to Nick Wood on court five and Diaz fell 6-4 to Oosterbaan on court three.
Freshman Martin Joyce won his opening set on court six but fell in set two and was in a third-set tie-break with Zielinski when the match was decided.
The Buckeyes will jump back into Big Ten play next weekend when they head to Michigan State on Friday and return home to host Michigan on Sunday. The match in East Lansing will begin at 6 p.m. ET.
