TAMPA, Fla. – No. 4 Ohio State continued its hot streak on the road, knocking-off its second-straight top-20 opponent, this time downing No. 16 USF 4-3 in warm Tampa, Fla., Friday afternoon. The win was the seventh-straight for the Buckeyes.
Playing its first match outdoors this spring, Ohio State wasted little time in securing the doubles point. Ralf Steinbach and Martin Joyce picked up a 6-4 victory over Roberto Cid and Ignacio Gonzalez Mun on court two and then Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen topped Sasha Gozun and Dominic Cotrone 6-4 on court one.
In singles, Joyce kept his string of good play rolling with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Everth Dzib at No. 6. Joyce is 13-2 on the season. His win was followed by a pair of Buckeye losses by Chris Diaz and Steinbach and all of a sudden, the match was even at 2-2.
Pollanen then put the Buckeyes back in front with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Gonzalez Mun setting the stage for Torpegaard on court one for the clinching point. Playing No. 4 Roberto Cid, Torpegaard won the opening set 7-6 after dominating the tie-breaker 7-0. He then rolled to a 6-1 victory in the second set to give the Buckeyes the deciding fourth point. This was Torpegaard’s second win over Cid this season as he topped him in the consolation bracket of the ITA All-American Championship this past fall.
Hugo Di Feo was in the third set with Cotrone when the match was clinched and they played out the set with Cotrone coming away with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory.
The win was the Buckeyes’ eighth win over a top-25 team this season and they will look for a ninth this Sunday when they head to Athens, Ga., to take on No. 19 Georgia. The match is scheduled to start at Noon eastern.
