Buckeyes Win at Michigan State in Overtime, 6-5 – Ohio State Buckeyes

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Ohio State men’s hockey team posted its second straight overtime win, with Matthew Weis’ tally with 26 seconds left in overtime giving the squad a 6-5 victory at Michigan State Friday in Munn Ice Arena. The Buckeyes (13-17-3, 8-8-3-1 B1G) have now won their last four games and are unbeaten in six in a row, scoring 36 goals in the six games combined.
Friday in East Lansing, the teams were tied five times, with Michigan State forcing overtime with a goal with less than two seconds remaining. Ohio State came from a goal down three times in the second period. Just 1:15 after tying the game at three, the Buckeyes took their first lead of the game at 16:05 of the second period on David Gust’s second tally of the night. The Spartans tied the game early in the third but Buckeye freshman Brendon Kearney scored 2:09 later for a 5-4 advantage. With just 1.6 seconds remaining, the Spartans were able to score while skating with the extra attacker, sending the game to overtime. Michigan State put the first four shots on net in overtime, with Buckeye goalie Christian Frey stopping them all. Ohio State converted its lone shot on net, with Weis scoring off a pass from junior Nick Schilkey.
The teams will close the regular season series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in East Lansing. The Buckeyes and Spartans will then meet in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals Thursday in Saint Paul, Minn. The win secured the No. 4 seed for the Buckeyes in the league tournament.

In the win over Michigan State, 13 Buckeyes had at least one point, with five posting two points. Gust had his first career multiple goal game, while Schilkey and freshman Dakota Joshua each had two assists and sophomore Luke Stork and Kearney each had a goal and a helper for two points.
The only goal of the first period was scored by Michigan State at 7:46, when Ryan Keller scored on the rush. The teams combined for 25 shots in the period, with Ohio State ahead 14-11. A late Buckeye penalty gave Michigan State a power play to start the second.
The Buckeyes tied the game three times in the second period before taking the lead at 16:05. At 2:38 Gust tied the team for the first time. Schilkey found his classmate at the far post and he scored with the MSU goalie still on the near side. Freshman John Wiitala also assisted on the tally. At 5:35 Mackenzie MacEachern put the Spartans up 2-1, scoring on a rebound. Just 26 seconds later Stork took a pass from Joshua and converted a breakaway to tie the game at two. Kearney had the second assist on the goal, Stork’s sixth of the year. MSU took a 3-2 lead when Zach Osburn hit the crossbar but JT Stenglein was there for the rebound at 10:55. The Buckeyes deadlocked the score at three at 14:50. During a Buckeye rush, a Spartan defender fell and took out the MSU goalie and Anthony Greco was there to put the puck home with both Spartans in the crease. Defensemen Josh Healey and Tommy Parran assisted on the tally, Greco’s 12thj of the year. At 16:05 the Buckeyes took their first lead of the day when Gust scored from the slot with a quick shot off a pass from Brevig. Kevin Miller had the second assist. Shots were 11-10 in favor of the Buckeyes in the period.
Just 4:05 into the third period Matt DeBlouw tied the game at 4, scoring after a long MSU shift in the Buckeye zone. At 6:14 Ohio State regained the lead (5-4) when Kearney from right in front off a pass from Joshua, with Stork picking up the second assist. With time running down, MSU pulled its goalie for the extra attacker and converted to tie the game with just 1.6 seconds left in regulation. Joe Cox knocked the puck out of the air off a save and in. Video review of the play confirmed the call, which was called a goal on the ice. Michigan State had nine shots in the period, with Ohio State putting eight on net. No penalties were called in the period.
In overtime, Frey made four saves before the Buckeyes scored on their lone shot on goal of OT. On the winner, the Buckeyes rushed up the ice, with Gerard passing to Schilkey on the right wing. Schilkey passed to Weis, who was driving the net, and he redirected the puck in. The play was originally called no goal, but review showed the puck crossed the line before the net moved, giving the Buckeyes the gamewinner with 26.3 seconds left in the OT period.
Each team had 34 shots in the game and was 0-for-2 on the power play. Frey had 29 saves in 64:31 for the Buckeyes, while MSU’s Jake Hildebrand had 28 stops in 63:12.
Ohio State blocked 19 Michigan State shot attempts in the game, led by Healey with five and freshman defenseman Sasha Larocque with four.
Postgame Notes
• Ohio State has scored 36 goals in its last six games, going 5-0-1 in the stretch. The squad is seventh nationally, scoring 3.67 goals per game.
• The win was the Buckeyes’ second consecutive 6-5 overtime win. The last time Oho State won back-to-back games in overtime was March 18-19, 2004 in the CCHA Tournament, with a 6-5 OT win over Notre Dame and 2-1 OT win over Miami. The squad is 2-4-3 in overtime this season.
• Gust had his first career multiple-goal game. He is second on the team with 34 points this season, with a team-best 24 assists.
• Schilkey is first for the Buckeyes with 19 goals and 41 points this season, ranking second with 22 assists. He is on a seven-game point streak, with six goals, 10 assists and 16 points in the stretch (2.29 points per game). It is just the third 40+ point season for a Buckeye since 2006. He has multiple points in five of his last six games.
• Weis is on a seven-game point streak, with three goals and nine assists for 12 points in the stretch. He is third on the team with 30 points, ranking third with 20 assists.
• Gerard is on a four-game point streak and has two goals and two assists for four points in the stretch.
• Joshua has five points, with two goals and three assists, in the last three games, with back-to-back two-point outings. It was his first game with two assists as a Buckeye.
• Parran is on a six-game point streak (1g, 7a, 8p) and all nine of his points this season have come in the last nine games.
• Kearney has a point in each of his last four games (3g, 3a, 6p) and has a goal in each of the last three. It was his second career two-point game and the second in three games.
• The game was the Buckeyes’ 25th this season decided by two or fewer goals. The squad is 5-8 in one-goal games on the year.
