Athletes of the Week
- Taylor Sandbothe, Women’s Volleyball
- Sandbothe was named the Golden Grizzlies Invitational Most Valuable Player on Saturday, averaging 3.60 points per set over a three-game stretch, bolstered by 2.90 kills/set and 1.00 blocks/set.
- Kyle Culbertson, Men’s Soccer
- Culbertson, a senior, tallied a goal and an assist in Ohio State’s 3-3 tie against No. 11 Akron on Wednesday.
Hall of Fame
Fourteen new members were inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame Saturday at the home football game against Northern Illinois: Tim Anderson, football (1968-70); Justin Cook, men’s soccer (2000-02, 04); Terence Dials, men’s basketball (2002, 2004-06); Lara Dickenmann, women’s soccer (2004-07); Natalia Diea, women’s diving (2001-03); Annabelle Fago, women’s rowing (2004-07); Joey Galloway, football (1991-94); Therese Hession, women’s golf head coach (1991-Present); J Jaggers, wrestling (2006-09); Perry Martter, wrestling (1921-23); Teresa Meyer, pistol (2005-08); Dan Seimetz, baseball (1995-98); Paul Tilley, men’s hockey (1977-80); Jim Tressel, football head coach (2001-10).
No. 1 Football
Darron Lee returned an interception 41 yards for a touchdown and the Ohio State defense held Northern Illinois to only 190 yards of offense in a 20-13 victory Saturday at Ohio Stadium.
No. 13 Women’s Volleyball (11-1)
Ohio State picked up its third tournament title of the young season, clinching the Golden Grizzlies Invitational crown Saturday evening vs. host Oakland in four sets (25-23, 25-16, 23-25, 25-18). The Buckeyes topped Eastern Illinois and Western Michigan en route to the championship match.
The trio of Elizabeth Campbell, Valeria León and Sandbothe were named to the all-tournament team. León was selected Big Ten co-Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the week.
Field Hockey (5-2)
Ohio State used two second-half goals to earn a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Ohio on Sunday. Peanut Johnson, last week’s Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, had a hand in all three Ohio State goals, scoring twice and assisting on the third.
On Friday, Caroline Rath scored her first career goal to lead Ohio State to a 2-1 victory over Michigan State.
Cross Country
Placing three runners in the Top 10, the Buckeye men totaled a team score of 68 to finish second at the Commodore Classic in Nashville Saturday. Nick Elswick led the Buckeyes with a fourth-place finish in a time of 24:47.8, followed by Clayton Bowie (seventh, 24:59.3) and Evan Stifel (eighth, 24:59.7).
Sakiko Minagawa was the top finisher on the women’s side with a 16th-place time of 17:30.0 as the Buckeyes totaled a team score of 161 to place sixth
No. 20 Women’s Soccer (5-2-2, 0-1-1 B1G)
No. 20 Ohio State played to a scoreless draw against Wisconsin Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. For the game, the Buckeyes held a 13-12 advantage in shots, 6-5 on goal.
Men’s Soccer (1-4-2, 0-1-1 B1G)
The Buckeyes earned a pair of ties against Top-15 opponents last week, fighting to a 1-1 tie against No. 13 Penn State on Sunday and a thrilling 3-3 draw Wednesday at No. 11 Akron.
Women’s Tennis
Miho Kowase finished third at the season-opening Miami Fall Invite Sunday in Coral Gables, Fla., coming back to defeat Miami’s Clara Tanielian in a super tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6).
