COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Alex Johnson and juniors Emeric Quade and Andrew Rickly have been named Ohio State men’s gymnastics team captains for the 2015-16 season, head coach Rustam Sharipov announced Wednesday.
The Buckeyes will be led by a trio of captains for a second consecutive season and only the sixth time in the history of the program. The first time the squad featured three captains was 2001, when the Buckeyes won their last national championship.
“I am excited to announce our 2015-16 team captains, Alex Johnson, Emeric Quade and Andrew Rickly,” Sharipov said. “The team selected three guys for the second year in a row and once again, each captain has a unique role on the team. All three will be outstanding representatives for our program in the gym, classroom and community.”
Johnson previously served as a captain for the 2014-15 season. A two-time All-American on high bar, Johnson claimed the Big Ten title in the event as a junior last season on his way to First Team All-B1G honors. A Marysville, Ohio, product, Johnson was the 2014 recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
Quade has excelled both academically and athletically in his time with the Buckeyes. An Academic All-American, Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete, he made tremendous strides last season, representing the Scarlet and Gray on floor exercises at both the NCAA and Big Ten championships. Quade is a native of Tucson, Ariz.
Rickly earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors and a bronze medal on high bar last season at the conference championships before competing on high bar and parallel bars at the NCAA Qualifier. The junior from Lewis Center, Ohio, is an Academic All-Big Ten selection and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete.
The Buckeyes open the 2016 season with the Scarlet and Gray Intrasquad Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. The annual exhibition meet will be held at the Steelwood Athletic Training Facility. Ohio State opens the regular season Jan. 16 at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago.
