COLUMBUS, Ohio – There may or may not be a Buckeye in the pool when the synchronized swimming competition opens at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio but there will be one on the pool deck. Former Buckeye swimmer Irene (Abrahams) Hawes was selected to be an official for the games.
Hawes is no stranger to judging synchronized swimming competitions as she has been a judge since the age of 16. She has worked her way up through the ranks and was selected to judge the 2009 and 2015 World Championships, which were held in Kazan, Russia earlier this summer. Hawes is also a veteran of four Junior World Championships, most recently in 2014 in Finland.
The former Irene Abrahams was a three-year letterwinner for the Buckeyes from 1978-80 and was part of three National Championship teams.
The Rio Games begin on August 5, 2016 with the synchronized swimming competition running from Sunday, August 14 through Friday, August 19 at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre.
