89 Buckeyes Named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A total of 89 Ohio State student-athletes from 27 sports were honored by the Big Ten Conference on Wednesday as Big Ten Distinguished Scholars. Student-athletes on the list must have be letterwinners in at least their second year at their school and earn a minimum grade-point average of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year. A total of 788 Big Ten athletes from 38 sports were recognized.
The Buckeye men’s swimming and diving team led the Ohio State contingent with eight Distinguished Scholars. Women’s swimming and diving as well as synchronized swimming and wrestling each had six representatives on the list. The list of 17 Buckeyes that had a perfect 4.0 GPA includes Minori Minagawa, Sakiko Minagawa and Michelle Thomas from women’s cross country, Taylor Kuehl of women’s ice hockey, Nicholas Smith of pistol, Ashley Gruenbaum of women’s soccer, Andrew Appleby and Joseph Long of men’s swimming and diving, Lorraine Hack of synchronized swimming, Brady Gelvin of men’s track and field, Katie Borchers or women’s track and field and Christy Blough of men’s volleyball, Olivia O’Reilly of softball, Mary Kate Facchina of women’s lacrosse, Nathan Tomasello and Randy Languis of wrestling and Sydney Stype of field hockey.
The 2014-15 year was a good one for Ohio State both on and off the field. In addition to five team National Championships on the field, a total of 304 student-athletes were honored with Academic All-Big Ten honors as 538 athletes were named OSU Scholar-Athletes. This year alone, 211 student-athletes received their degrees from The Ohio State University.
