COLUMBUS, Ohio — Based on their academic performance, the Ohio State women’s cross country and women’s tennis teams have been honored with public recognition awards, the NCAA announced Wednesday. These awards are given each year to teams scoring in the Top 10 percent in each sport based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR).
“These standout performances are a result of the commitment of our student-athletes toward earning their degrees and the support they receive from both their coaches and the academic support staff,” Professor John P. Bruno, Ohio State Faculty Athletics Representative, said. “Being recognized by the NCAA shows the success these student-athletes have had balancing academic benchmarks with the challenges of athletic competition.”
The women’s tennis team earns a Top 10 spot for the sixth consecutive year. The women’s cross country team has been recognized six times since the public recognitions began 10 years ago, including in each of the last two years. For the most recent recognitions, scores required to be in the Top 10 ranged from 980 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport.
In the 11th year of APR data for most teams, the scores provide a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for academic eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance. The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years.
