COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State senior captain and tight end Jeff Heuerman, a 6-5, 255-pounder from Naples, Fla., and Barron Collier High School, was drafted in the 3rd round of the NFL Draft Friday evening by the Denver Broncos. Heuerman, the third pick for the Broncos and the 92nd overall selection, is the second Buckeye to be chosen after Devin Smith went earlier in the evening, in the 2nd round and No. 37 overall, to the New York Jets.
Heuerman played through injuries for much of his senior season but still started 14 games for the 2014 national champion Buckeyes. He caught 17 passes for 207 yards with two touchdowns as a senior, and he had 52 receptions for 792 yards and seven touchdowns for his career.
Heuerman played in 50 games and started 36 times at linebacker. He was a second-team all-Big Ten Conference pick as a senior after earning honorable mention all-Big Ten honors twice: as a junior in 2013 and as a sophomore in 2012 for the undefeated Buckeyes.
The Broncos have taken a Buckeye in each of the last two drafts, after previously choosing Bradley Roby in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
“(Heuerman) is a very experienced tight end from Ohio State,” tweeted John Elway, General Manager/Executive Vice President of Football Operations for the Denver Broncos. “He brings the right mentality and was the top guy on our board at the time.”
