INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Ohio State University women’s golf team had a splendid start to its Big Ten Championship title defense bid; constructing a three-stroke gap atop the team standings after Day One. Ohio State jammed four Buckeyes into the individual top-10 in carding a 7-under 281 on Friday. No. 15 Northwestern is slotted second at 284 (-4).
Senior captain Jan Chanpalangsri paced all players with a 4-under 68 to claim Day One leader status. She torched the Back 9 for five birdies and totaled a half dozen on the day. Sophomore Katja Pogacar put forth a tournament-best seven birdies and is right behind Chanpalangsri, tied for second overall at 3-under (69). She would have surpassed her teammate for the top spot if not for a double bogey on the 18th.
Ohio State racked up a team total of 24 birdies, besting the competition by seven. Michigan’s 17 birdies ranked second.
Jessica Porvasnik and Rio Watanabe found their way into the top-10 as well. The OSU duo each registered even par 72s to earn a share of ninth place. Porvasnik was even on both the Front and Back 9s while Watanabe’s 1-under Front 9 was soured a bit by an 18th hole double bogey.
Claudia Lim and Zoe-Beth Brake donned the Scarlet & Gray as well, posting rounds of 77 and 78, respectively.
