Athletes of the Week
Travis Lakins, baseball
- Lakins, a sophomore, pitched a 10-inning, two-hit complete-game performance to guide the baseball team to a 2-1 victory at No. 24 Nebraska on Saturday afternoon. It marked the first time an OSU pitcher tossed 10 innings since 2008 when Jake Hale threw 10 innings in a 4-3 win (11) vs. Michigan State (April 11, 2008).
Jessica Porvasnik, women’s golf
- Porvasnik, a sophomore, was Ohio State’s top overall performer at the 2015 Lady Buckeye Invitational. The reigning Big Ten Player of the Year carded rounds of 74-75-72 to grab a share of fifth place at 5-over (221). She consistently met par, racking up an event-high 42 pars over the course of 54 holes.
General Athletics News
- The Ohio State winners of the Big Ten Medal of Honor are track and field/cross country runner Katie Borchers and Kevin Metka from the men’s tennis team.
- The other finalists for the Big Ten Medal of Honor were Rhys Douglas (fencing), Alex Ivanov (soccer), Misha Koudinov (gymnastics) and Tim Wetzel (baseball) on the men’s side and Katie Chase (lacrosse), Taylor Kuehl (hockey), Celina Merza (fencing) and Chloe Meyer (rowing) on the women’s side.
Football
- In front of a national spring-game record crowd of 99,391 at Ohio Stadium, Cardale Jones threw for 304 yards and tossed two touchdowns to Corey Smith to lead Gray to a 17-14 win over Scarlet.
- The game was played under sunny skies with temperatures in the 70s. The attendance surpassed the 95,722 at the 2009 spring game at Ohio Stadium, the previous high.
- Ohio State sophomore running back Ezekiel Elliott was named the most outstanding amateur athlete in the United States as the winner of the 85th AAU James E. Sullivan Award. Elliott became just the eighth football player to receive the prestigious recognition.
Baseball (26-10, 9-3 B1G)
- The baseball team captured a series win over No. 24 Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., earning victories on Saturday and Sunday.
- On Saturday, Lakins led the Buckeyes to a 2-1 win, which snapped a six-game losing streak vs. the Huskers.
- On Sunday, senior co-captain Aaron Gretz collected the go-ahead RBI single as the Buckeyes plated three runs in the tenth inning to defeat the Cornhuskers by a score of 5-2.
No. 16/20 Women’s Lacrosse (11-5. 2-2 B1G)
- The women’s lacrosse team led from start to finish in a dominating win on senior night, 17-7, over visiting Rutgers Thursday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
- The win makes the 2015 seniors the winningest class in program history with 43 victories, surpassing last year’s senior class.
No. 1 Women’s Rowing
- The women’s rowing team finished 5-0 on the second and final day of competition at the Clemson Invitational Sunday morning in Clemson, S.C.
- The Scarlet and Gray competed in 15 races over two days on Lake Hartwell, finishing first in 12 contests and runner-up in three additional sprints. Ohio State first varsity eight and second varsity four boats finished with unblemished 3-0 records for the weekend.
Women’s Golf
- The top of the final individual leaderboard at the 2015 Lady Buckeye Invitational was peppered with Ohio State student-athletes as six of seven Buckeyes competing placed in the top-17 of 75 players in the field.
- Ohio State earned runner-up honors as a team, finishing three strokes back from the tournament champion Kent State.
No. 17 Women’s Tennis (18-5, 10-1 B1G)
- The women’s tennis team completed regular season play at home Sunday afternoon indoors at the Varsity Tennis Center with a 6-1 win over No. 50 Michigan State.
- With the win, the Buckeyes finish the season with 10 wins in Big Ten Conference play and secured a second-place finish in the Big Ten regular season standings.
- The team will play as a No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament.
No. 11 Men’s Tennis (23-7, 10-1 B1G)
- The men’s tennis team earned a share of its 10th-straight B1G regular season title and will be the No. 2-seed in this week’s Big Ten Tournament.
- The Buckeyes downed Nebraska 4-1 on Sunday in Lincoln to secure a share of the Big Ten regular season title.
- Under the direction of head coach Ty Tucker, the Buckeyes have lost just one Big Ten match in the last 10 seasons.
Men’s Golf
- The men’s golf team battled through inclement weather conditions at the 2015 Boilermaker Invitational to place fourth out of 15 schools competing on the Kampen Course.
- Buckeyes Clark Engle and Logan Jones both earned a share of sixth place on the individual leaderboard.
Track & Field
- The track and field team lit up the track at the Virginia Challenge Friday and Saturday in Charlottesville, Va., winning six event titles over two days of competition at Lannigan Field.
- Redshirt junior Antonio Blanks led the Buckeyes on the men’s side, returning to his All-Big Ten form with a win in the 400-meter hurdles. Blanks also anchored the men’s 4×400-meter relay team to a first-place finish.
- Ohio State would make it a sweep of the 4×400-meter relay titles as the women’s team, the reigning Big Ten indoor champions in the event, also emerged victorious
Softball (24-19, 8-9 B1G)
- The softball team rebounded from a 3-2 loss in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader against Rutgers to record an 8-4 victory in the finale, taking the weekend series from the Scarlet Knights.
- On Friday, the team scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning, keyed by a home run from Caitlin Conrad and RBI single from Anna Kirk, to earn a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Rutgers.
