GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 41 Ohio State women’s golf team was paired with two top-25 foes in the SunTrust Gator Invitational opening round, matching No. 20 North Carolina State at 28-over and besting No. 24 Tulane by two strokes. The Buckeyes and Wolfpack are tied for eighth overall in the 15-team field.
With one of three rounds in the books, Ohio State is just a pair of shots out of the top-5, eight from the top-3 and trail first place Arizona (+15) by 13 tallies. Second round tee times begin Saturday at 9 a.m. ET with Ohio State, Penn State and NC State slated to tee off at 10:30.
Senior co-captains Jan Chanpalangsri and Claudia Lim were the top two Buckeye performers, posting scores of 75 and 77, respectively. Chanpalangsri is tied for 17th individually while Lim owns a piece of 32nd place.
Only 17 of 84 players were able to record multiple birdies on the difficult track. Ohio State’s Rio Watanabe pulled off the feat, dropping in birdies on #3 and #10. She registered an 8-over 78 on the day, good for a share of 38th place. Fellow second-year Buckeye Katja Pogacar is tied for 38th as well, contributing a 78 to the team tally.
Jessica Porvasnik rounded out the OSU lineup, carding a 10-over 80 to settle in at T-52nd. Lina Aguillon, representing Ohio State as an individual, notched an 85 and is tied for 77th.
