Athletes of the Week
The Wresting Team
- The 94-year wait is over. Ohio State, on the strength individual national titles by Logan Stieber and Nathan Tomasello, clinched its first-ever team title on Saturday. The Buckeyes (102 points) topped second-place Iowa by 18 points, third-place Edinboro (75.5 points) and fourth-place Missouri (73.5 points).
- Stieber officially took his place in wrestling history with his 11-5 championship-round victory over second-seeded Mitchell Port of Edinboro in the final match of the night. He now joins Cael Sanderson (Iowa State, 1998-2002), Kyle Dake (Cornell, 2010-13) and Pat Smith (Oklahoma State, 1990-1992, 1994) in the elite group of wrestlers to win four NCAA titles.
Women’s Basketball (24-10, 13-5 B1G)
- The women’s basketball team beat James Madison 90-80 on Saturday in the first round of the Greensboro Regional of the 2015 NCAA Tournament behind 28 points from Ameryst Alston.
- Big Ten co-player of the year Kelsey Mitchell added 23 points and fellow freshman Alexa Hart finished with 20 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocked shots for fifth-seeded Ohio State.
Men’s Basketball (24-11, 11-7 B1G)
- Freshman D’Angelo Russell scored 28 points to rally Ohio State from an early 12-point deficit, and the 10th-seeded Buckeyes beat seventh-seeded VCU 75-72 in overtime on Thursday.
- Ohio State made its 27th appearance in the NCAA tournament. Overall, Ohio State has a 49-26 record all-time in NCAA tournament play.
Women’s Golf
- The women’s golf captured its 99th tournament team title in program history, besting the field by five strokes at the MountainView Collegiate Invitational. The championship marks Ohio State’s second this season and the 44th under the guidance of 24-year head coach Therese Hession.
- Jan Chanpalangsri and Katja Pogacar each posted 54-hole totals of 211, dropping five shots under par. The Buckeye pair both earned a share of fourth place overall in the large 103-player field.
Men’s Hockey
- The men’s hockey team advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament after posting a 3-1 quarterfinal win over Penn State Thursday in Joe Louis Arena.
- The Buckeyes led 2-0 after the first period on goals from Nick Schilkey and Justin DaSilva. Penn State cut the Ohio State lead in half midway through the second period, but David Gust scored with one minute left in the stanza to regain Ohio State’s two-goal lead.
Fencing
- The fencing team finished fifth overall at the 2015 NCAA Fencing Championships, extending the consecutive Top 5 finish streak to 14 years.
- Six Buckeyes registered Top 8 finishes to reach the podium after the distribution of women’s individual awards.
No. 17 Men’s Lacrosse (7-3, 0-0 B1G)
- The men’s lacrosse team overcame a 6-3 deficit to post a 7-6 road win at No. 16 Towson Tuesday night at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Md. The Buckeyes scored the game’s last four games, while shutting out the Tigers for the final 27:54.
No. 9/15 Women’s Lacrosse (8-2, 0-0 B1G)
- The women’s lacrosse team registered its fourth-straight road win at Cincinnati on Friday.
- Senior Mary Kate Facchina led Ohio State with four points on three goals and one assist and senior Kelsea Ayers added three goals of her own.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
- The women’s swimming and diving team finished in 40th at the 2015 NCAA Championships, which concluded Saturday at Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.
- Over the course of the meet, three Buckeyes – Ashley Vance, Zhesi Li and Lindsey Clary – received honorable mention All-America recognition.
- Three school records were broken, with new marks set in the 200 freestyle relay, 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly events.
No. 11 Men’s Volleyball (16-6, 7-3 MIVA)
- The men’s volleyball team opened its Pennsylvania weekend road trip by sweeping Saint Francis in three sets on Friday. Ohio State out-scored the Red Flash by a total of 17 points on the night (25-18, 25-23, 25-17).
Baseball (14-6, 2-1 B1G)
- Senior pitcher Ryan Riga threw eight scoreless innings, while classmate closer Trace Dempsey broke the Ohio State career saves record in the ninth with his 30th in a 3-0 shutout victory over Michigan State Sunday afternoon at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium.
- Adding a 6-5 victory over the Spartans on Saturday, the Buckeyes earned their first Big Ten series win.
No. 22 Women’s Tennis (12-4, 5-0 B1G)
- The women’s tennis team earned two wins Sunday afternoon on the road, downing 47th-ranked Maryland, 6-1, in College Park, Md., before taking down UMBC, 6-0, in Baltimore.
Men’s Tennis (15-6, 3-0 B1G)
- For the 14th straight season, the Ohio State men’s tennis team completed a sweep of the state of Michigan. The Buckeyes took down Michigan State 7-0 in Columbus this afternoon, on the heels of a 5-2 victory against Michigan in Ann Arbor on Friday.
