Ohio State vs. Arizona
Ohio State will be facing the Wildcats for just the third time in history Saturday in Portland in the third round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament. Ohio State is 2-0 in the series. The Buckeyes defeated Arizona Dec. 29, 1971 in Los Angeles 90-47. The Buckeyes were ranked No. 6 nationally in that game, the first for OSU that year in the UCLAN Classic. The most recent game between the two schools was March 28, 2013, also in Los Angeles, in the 2013 NCAA West Regional Semifinals. The No. 7 ranked Buckeyes downed the No. 22 Wildcats 73-70.

Ohio State is 38-36 all-time vs. teams representing the Pacific 12 Conference. The Buckeyes have faced every team except Colorado and have a 2-0 record vs. Arizona. Last Time vs. Arizona
LaQuinton Ross hit a late 3-pointer to lift Ohio State to a 73-70 win over Arizona in the 2013 NCAA West Regional Semifinals in Los Angeles (March 28, 2013). Ross hit the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 2 seconds to play, and Ohio State advanced to the West Regional final. Ross, Ohio State’s remarkable reserve, scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half for the second-seeded Buckeyes, who rallied from an early 11-point deficit. With Ross making a series of tough shots capped by that dramatic 3, Ohio State weathered the sixth-seeded Wildcats’ late charge for its 11th consecutive victory since mid-February. Deshaun Thomas scored 20 points for Ohio State, and Aaron Craft added 13 before ceding Ohio State’s final shot to Ross. Craft hit an awfully similar 3-pointer against Iowa State a week earlier to send the Buckeyes forward with a 78-75 victory.

Matta vs. Former Assistants
Since becoming a head coach 15 seasons ago at Butler (2001), assistant coaches who have worked for Thad Matta during stints at Butler, Xavier and Ohio State have gone on to become successful head coaches. Matta is 13-5 in games coached against his former assistant coaches. Matta teams have faced squads coached by Sean Miller, twice. The first was a 78-71 overtime win vs. Xavier with Miller as head coach March 17, 2007 in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament in Lexington, Ky. The only other meeting was with Miller coaching Arizona in the 2013 NCAA West Regional semifinal in Los Angeles. Ohio State won that game 73-70. The two Matta/Miller matchups came down to the wire. No. 1 Ohio State needed a late 3-pointer from Ron Lewis to send the game into overtime in Lexington. No. 7 ranked Ohio State also needed a late 3 from LaQuinton Ross to break a 70-all tie with two seconds to play, giving the Buckeyes the win over Arizona in 2013.

D’Angelo Russell is averaged 23.3 points in three postseason games this season. He is shooting 46 percent from the field (24-52), 40 percent from 3-point range (10-25) and 80 percent from the foul line (12-15). He also has contributed eight assists, six blocks and five steals in a wins vs. Minnesot and VCU and a loss to Michigan State. Shannon Scott in Ohio State’s second leading scorer this year in postseason play with 14.3 ppg. Scott also has 25 assists and is perfect at the foul line (9-9). Freshman Jae’Sean Tate is the leading rebounder with 6.3 boards a game. Senior Amir Williams has made 7-of-9 field goals (.778). Matta Continues to Build Impressive Ohio State Résumé
Thad Matta has accomplished a remarkable list of accomplishments in 11 years as head coach of the Buckeyes. Matta’s teams have never failed to win 20 games, a record streak (11 seasons) in Ohio State history. In fact, Matta has never failed to reach the 20-win plateau in 15 years as a head coach. Ohio State (24-10) reached 20 wins in 2014-15 with a win at home over Nebraska (2/26/15). Ohio State has reached 30 or more wins three times, all with Matta at the helm. Back-to-back seasons with 30 wins in 2010-11 (34) and 2011-12 (31) only trail the 35 wins recorded in 2006-07, the Ohio State record for single-season victories. In addition, Matta has won five Big Ten regular-season titles, including three of the last six (2010-12), four Big Ten postseason tournament crowns in seven title game opportunities, nine NCAA tournament appearances, including four-consecutive (2010-13) runs to the “Sweet 16,” a pair of Final Four trips (2007, 2012) and a title game appearance in 2007. D’Angelo Russell was selected to the United States Basketball Writers Association 2015 Freshman All-America Team Tuesday. Ohio State’s rookie guard leads the Buckeyes in scoring (19.6 ppg.) and rebounding (5.6 rpg.). He is second is assists (169) and steals (55). Russell, who has scored 10 or more points in 32-consecutive games, has scored 20 or more points 16 times this season and twice has reached the 30-point plateau.
Thad Matta has put together a stellar record in the month of March over his career. He is No. 2 among active coaches with a 60-18 record in March over his 15-year career.
Russell was named one of five finalists March 8 for the Jerry West Award, honoring the best shooting guard in the country. The winner will be named April 10.
Russell was named to the Wooden Award 15 finalists list March 7, he is one of three underclassmen remaining in contention for the honor, which recognizes the national player of the year. The winner will be named April 10.
Russell was named (March 4) one of 10 semifinalists for the 2015 Naismith Trophy Men’s College Player of the Year, presented by AT&T. Four finalists will be named March 22 with the winner named April 5.
Russell also has been selected as a finalist by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association as one of 14 outstanding players for the 2015 Oscar Robertson Trophy, given annually the nation’s top player.
Rookie Jae’Sean Tate set a career high with 22 points vs. Nebraska Feb. 26. He now has three 20-point games to his credit, all in Big Ten Conference play. In those games at Indiana (9-10 shooting/20 pts.), at Rutgers (8-11/20 pts.) and vs. Nebraska at home (8-9/22 pts.), he made a combined 25-of-30 field goals (.833).
Jae’Sean Tate currently holds the No. 4 spot among freshmen in Ohio State history in season field goal shooting percentage at 58.9 pct. (123-209). His father, Jermaine Tate, is No. 5 at 56.9 pct. (115-202). Jermaine played his freshman season at Ohio State in 1996.
Since entering the starting lineup 14 games ago at Northwestern, Tate has averaged 11.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. He has made 71-118 field goal attempts (.602), blocked nine shots and recorded 11 steals in 27.4 minutes per game.
