OSU Falls On The Road At #8 Texas 4-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 11 Ohio State men’s tennis team finished its two-match road swing at Tulsa and Texas with a 4-1 setback to the No. 8 Longhorns on Tuesday at the Caswell Tennis Complex in Austin.
Ralf Steinbach was the lone Buckeye to earn a point as he bounced-back from back-to-back singles losses with a solid 7-6, 6-1 victory over Nick Naumann at No. 5.
The teams have now split a pair of meetings this season as Ohio State knocked-off Texas in the opening round of the ITA Indoor Team Championships in Chicago last month. The Buckeyes fall to 13-6 on the season with this setback.
Steinbach and senior All-American Kevin Metka raced out to two early breaks at No. 1 doubles against No. 35 Lloyd Glasspool and Soren Hess-Olesen. The No. 3-ranked Buckeye duo rolled to a 6-1 victory but that would be the only win of the three doubles matches for OSU. Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen fought back from down a break to even the match at 4-4 but lost the last two games and fell 6-4. Chris Diaz and Hunter Callahan also fell 6-2 and the Buckeyes dropped the doubles point for just the third time all season.
Diaz dropped the first set of singles action 6-1 to No. 2 Hess-Olesen and then fell 6-3 in the second. Steinbach’s win at No. 5 made the score 2-1 in favor of the hosts. The Longhorns then closed-out the match as Clement Homs topped Metka 6-4, 7-6 at No. 6 and Adrien Berkowicz took a 7-6, 6-3 decision from Callahan at the No. 3 spot.
The Buckeyes will conclude their four-match road swing this Friday with a trip to Michigan. OSU won its B1G opener against Penn State 6-1 on Feb. 27. The match with the Wolverines is set to begin at 6 p.m.
Ohio State will return home on Sunday for its first match in Columbus since its epic battle with No. 1 Oklahoma on March 6. The match Sunday will be against Michigan State and is set to start at Noon.
