Sophomore Alanna Goldie is gearing up for her second run at the NCAA Fencing Championship title, beginning on March 19. The Calgary, Alberta, native finished with a bronze medal in women’s foil at the event last year.
Student Life
- Do you prefer Oval Beach in the Fall or Spring (or maybe the Winter)? – Spring
Where is the best place to sit for lectures? – Near the front but not the front row.
Most underrated place to study on campus – Near Mirror Lake
Why did you choose to major in …? – Criminology because my goal is to be head of the K9 unit of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
Describe your first day as a student at The Ohio State University? – Crazy. I forgot my BuckID and got lost about 3 times but it all worked out in the end and I learned to keep my BuckID with my phone.

- Person I most admire – My father Brad Goldie. He worked hard his whole life to give my family good opportunities and not once did he complain or doubt my ability even when I did.
The greatest risk I’ve ever taken was – Moving away from my home to Ottawa when I was 19 to train for fencing.
In 10 years, I would like to be – Working in the K9 unit of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
If I had a million dollars, I would – Get a puppy and pay of my siblings to come to Columbus for a visit. Then I would probably save the rest until I knew how to properly spend money on things other than shoes.
Coolest thing you did this past summer – Summers are usually my downtime from school and fencing so the coolest thing I probably did was win an ice cream eating contest. Most prized possession – My guitar.
I would like to trade places for a day with – My coach to see how annoying I actually am.
If you could have dinner with any 3 people (alive or dead), who would they be and what/where would you eat – Elvis, Taylor Swift and Obama. We would probably eat gluten free pizza because it is my favorite.
Any superstitions, non-game/match related – I never like to say how I did on a test.
Dream event (non-sport or sport-related) you would like to attend – New York Fashion Week.
If your parents/guardians bragged about you, what would they say? – They would probably list various fencing results and then something about how I actually do my dishes unlike my siblings.

Do you have an interesting nickname? – For most of my life I was called Baby Goldie because one coach couldn’t remember my name and he knew my sister so I became Baby Goldie.
What is your hometown known for? – The Calgary Stampede

Cats or Dogs? – Dogs 100%
Early Bird or Night Owl? – I was always a night owl but 7 a.m. trainings have made it necessary to be an early bird for survival.
