COLUMBUS, Ohio – Flash back to April 5th, 2003. The Buckeye men’s tennis team welcomes Big Ten rival Illinois to Columbus for their toughest match of the season. After a hard fought battle with the Illini, the Buckeyes are defeated 5-2. That gloomy Saturday afternoon was the last time head coach Ty Tucker and his team was defeated in Columbus. The Buckeyes downed Purdue at home the next day, and haven’t looked back.
Flash forward 4,328 days, and you’ll find Coach Tucker’s Buckeyes winning their 200th straight home match, taking down the South Florida Bulls 4-0, extending the already-held NCAA all-time varsity sport home win streak record.
A packed Varsity Tennis Center was seeking an entertaining match, and the doubles teams did not disappoint. Kevin Metka and Ralf Steinbach lost for just the second time this season on court one 6-4. Hunter Callahan and Chris Diaz fought their way through an intense tiebreaker to win on court 3 7-6 (7-4). The attention then fell onto court 2, with Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen down a break 5-4. In a series of miraculous shots, the Buckeye duo broke USF’s serve to even the score at 5-5. The two teams then served out to enter a tiebreaker, where Torpegaard and Pollanen each dialed up devastating first serves to take the match 7-6 (7-3) and give the Buckeyes the doubles point.
The Buckeyes carried that momentum into singles, winning five of the six first sets. Callahan was dominant once again, as he took down USF’s Oliver Pramming in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Torpegaard followed with a 7-5, 6-3 victory on court two over Sasha Gozun before Metka sealed the victory on court six with a straight set 6-3, 7-5 win.
The win marks the 200th consecutive home victory for the Buckeyes, and number 436 for head coach Ty Tucker. The Buckeyes will be in Chicago this weekend for the ITA National Indoor Tournament before returning home to take on Notre Dame and Dayton February 21st. The Notre Dame match is set to begin at noon.
