Ohio State Tops Penn State, 5-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State men’s hockey team posted a 5-3 win over Penn State Friday in Value City Arena in a Big Ten game. The Buckeyes (10-17-2, 5-10-0-0 B1G) and Nittany Lions (16-11-4, 86-1-0-0 B1G) will close the series at 7 p.m. Saturday in VCA. The teams were tied at one after the first period before the Buckeyes took a 3-1 lead at 12:13 of the second. Penn State drew within one less than a minute later for a 3-2 Ohio State advantage heading into the second intermission. The Buckeyes scored twice in 57 seconds in the third at 8:02 and 8:59 to make it a three-goal Ohio State led. Penn State scored an extra attacker goal at 14:45, but could get no closer and Ohio State claimed the win.
Freshman Matthew Weis led the Buckeyes with two goals (his first career multiple-goal game), while sophomore goalie Christian Frey had 46 saves, his third game with more than 45 saves this season. Junior Anthony Greco and sophomore Nick Schilkey each had two assists in the victory. In all, 11 Buckeyes had at least one point vs. the Nittany Lions and 11 had at least one blocked shot.
Just 31 seconds into the game Tommy Olczyk scored on the rebound for a 1-0 PSU lead. At 14:26 Greco found Weis and he was able to score his fifth goal of the season, deadlocking the game at one. Senior Justin DaSilva had the second assist on the goal. Shots were 15-13 in favor of Penn State in the period.
Ohio State grabbed a 3-1 lead with the first two goals of the second period. The Buckeyes converted a power play chance at 1:19, with senior leading scorer Tanner Fritz redirecting a pass from Greco under PSU goalie PJ Musico from the top of the crease. Schilkey had the second helper on the goal, the Buckeyes’ first power play goal in five games. At 12:13 Schilkey passed up to junior Craig Dalrymple and he got the puck over to Weis in front, who scored on a backhand. At 13:09 Dylan Richard put in a loose puck to cut the Buckeye lead to one (3-2). The teams combined for 30 shots in the period, with Frey stopping 17-of-18 Nittany Lion attempts.
Just after a Buckeye power play chance expired, Buckeye sophomore Josh Healey scored his second goal of the season, as his shot from the point got through a screen at 8:02, set up by junior Tyler Lundey and senior Chad Niddery. Just 57 seconds later senior Nick Oddo forced a turnover and the puck went to freshman Luke Stork, who was able to beat his defender and score on a wrist shot for a 5-2 Buckeye advantage at 8:59. Penn State pulled its goalie early and was able to convert at 14:45 when Patrick Koudys scored, but the Nittany Lions could get no closer, despite a 6-on-4 advantage in the final 1:26 skating with the net empty after a Buckeye penalty. Penn State outshot Ohio State, 16-10, in the period.
For the game Penn State outshot Ohio State, 49-35. Frey played all 60 minutes for Ohio State and had 46 saves vs. Penn State for the second time in his career. He has a .908 save percentage this season. Musico had 30 stops in 56:28 for the Nittany Lions.
Ohio State blocked 22 Penn State shots, led by senior Al McLean with five and Healey and Fritz with three each.
Ohio State was 1-for-3 on the power play in the game and stopped Penn State on two chances.
