Buckeyes Record Road Win at Bellarmine, 8-7 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team posted an 8-7 road win against Bellarmine Friday evening in Louisville, Ky. The Buckeyes, winners of their last four games, will close the weekend with a game vs. No. 17 Marquette at 1 p.m. Sunday in Louisville. Senior Jesse King led the Buckeyes with four points on two goals and two assists, while graduate student Christopher May won 14-of-18 faceoffs and picked up 11 groundballs. Tom Carey had eight saves in the cage for Ohio State, which improved to 4-1 on the year.
Bellarmine scored the game’s first two goals, with Tucker Ciessau scoring at 8:53 and Tanner Barco tallying at 6:44. Ohio State scored the next two to tie the game. Senior David Planning tallied a man-up goal assisted by junior Carter Brown at 3:53 and then set up senior Turner Evans for a score 53 seconds later. Shots were 8-7 in favor of Ohio State in the quarter.
The Buckeyes scored the only five goals of the second quarter to carry a 7-2 lead into halftime. Brown found senior Rick Lewis for a goal at 13:43 to put Ohio State in the lead (3-2) for the first time. King then scored back-to-back at 13:05 (unassisted) and 8:07 with an assist from freshman Colin Chell. King then set up sophomore Johnny Pearson’s first career goal with 50 seconds left in the quarter. Ohio State had nine shots in the quarter, holding the Knights to four.
In the third quarter, Bellarmine scored twice and shut the Buckeyes out. Austin Shanks tallied at 12:07 and Dylan Gatt scored at 4:32 for the Knights. Shots were 8-6 in favor of the Buckeyes in the quarter and the Bellarmine goalie made five saves.
Bellarmine scored the first goal of the fourth quarter at 12:53 for a 7-5 game but Brown responded at 11:47 to put Ohio State back up by three. The Knights’ Jack Perkins made it a two-goal game at 6:34 and with just 12 seconds left Ciessau cut the Buckeye advantage to one. May won the final faceoff to give Ohio State control of the ball and secure the win. Bellarmine outshot Ohio State, 9-4, in the quarter.
The Buckeyes outshot the Knights, 29-26, in the game. Carey made eight saves in all 60 minutes. He now has a 6.11 goals-against average and .615 save percentage on the year.
May took all 18 faceoffs for the Buckeyes and won 14 (77.8 percent). He had 11 groundballs for the second time this season. Ohio State had the edge in groundballs, 28-18.
King, who was named to the Tewaaraton Watch List Thursday, extended his point streak to 41 games (83g, 58a, 141p in the stretch) and now has a team-best 14 goals and 21 points on the year. He is eighth in program history with 152 points and 10th with 61 assists. Brown had his third multiple-point game of the season with a goal and two assists for three points and is second on the squad with 14 points, including a team-high nine assists.
