Ohio State Falls at No. 15 Michigan, 5-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Ohio State men’s hockey team lost to No. 15-ranked Michigan, 5-2, Sunday in Yost Ice Arena. The Buckeyes (9-17-2, 4-10-0-0 B1G) and Wolverines (17-11-0, 9-5-0-0 B1G) split the weekend series, after a 5-3 Buckeye victory Friday in Columbus.
Next up, Ohio State opens a four-game homestand with two games vs. Penn State. The teams will meet at 6:30 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena.
Michigan led 1-0 after the first period on a goal from Zach Hyman at 13:17 with the teams skating 4-on-4, scoring from the far post after a backhand pass from Dylan Larkin. Shots were 9-8 in favor of Michigan in the period. Ohio State had the only power play chance.
In the second, the Wolverines’ Larkin tallied on the power play at 5:15 and shortly after a Wolverine power play expired, Zach Werenski’s shot from the point got through at 8:40 for a 3-0 Michigan advantage. A major penalty was called on Michigan at 9:43 but Ohio State was unable to convert, with a penalty with 1:53 left on the major ending the Buckeye advantage. Ohio State outshot Michigan 10-9 in the period and ended the period on the power play.
At 9:05, Larkin found Justin Selman at the far post for a 4-0 UM lead. Just after a Buckeye power play expired, Ohio State senior Nick Oddo found classmate Tanner Fritz in the slot and he tallied his eighth goal, and team-best 19th point, of the year. Freshman Janik Moser had the second assist on the goal, which came at 12:25. Werenski netted his second of the game with a shot from the wall getting through a screen at 14:34. The game’s final goal came at 19:34 with the teams skating 4-on-4. Buckeye freshman Nicholas Jones got the puck down low and he passed to junior Tyler Lundey, who came around the front and scored his fourth goal of the year. Shots were 12-5 in favor of Ohio State in the period.
Ohio State outshot Michigan, 30-23, in the game. Buckeye sophomore Christian Frey played all 60 minutes and had 18 saves. Michigan’s Steve Racine made 28 stops in 59:31. Ohio State blocked 16 Michigan shot attempts, led by defensemen Justin DaSilva and Josh Healey with three each.
Ohio State was 0-for-4 on the power play and Michigan was 1-for-3.
