COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State men’s hockey team closes its regular-season series with No. 15 Michigan at 5 p.m. Sunday in Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Buckeyes (9-16-2, 4-9-0-0 B1G) and Wolverines (16-11-0, 8-5-0-0) faced off in Columbus Friday night, a 5-3 Buckeye victory.

Teddy Bear Toss a Week Away
- The fifth annual Teddy Bear Toss will be in Value City Arena Friday when the Buckeyes host Penn State. Fans are encouraged to bring a new stuffed animal (wrapped in a plastic bag) to throw on the ice after the first period. All stuffed animals collected will be donated to Ronald McDonald House and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Buckeye Snapshot
- The Buckeyes, 2-1 in their last three games, are 9-16-2 overall and 4-9-0 in the Big Ten.
- Ohio State is averaging 2.67 goals a game and allowing 3.48 goals a contest. The power play is 13-for-94 (.138) and the penalty kill is 63-for-86 (.733). The team averages 10.6 penalty minutes a night.
- Senior Tanner Fritz leads the squad with 18 points, while junior Anthony Greco has a team-best 14 goals. Freshman Christian Lampasso has a squad-high 12 assists, followed by Fritz aned freshman Matthew Weis with 11 each. Senior Matt Johnson is second with 12 goals and is tied with Greco for second with 17 points each. Sophomore Nick Schilkey is fourth with 16 points, with seven goals and nine assists.
- In goal, sophomores Christian Frey and Matt Tomkins have both seen significant time for the Buckeyes. Frey has started and played in 16 games, including nine of the last 11, posting a 3.18 goals-against average and .910 save percentage. Tomkins has played in 13 games total (starting 11) and has a 3.56 goals-against average and .870 save percentage. Logan Davis has played limited time in two games and has a 2.75 goals-against average and .846 save percentage.
Last Time Out – Buckeyes Top Wolverines, 5-3
- Ohio State defeated Michigan, 5-3, Friday in Value City Arena. The win was the Buckeyes’ first over Michigan since sweeping a series in Ann Arbor Nov. 18-19, 2011 and ended a 10-game (0-9-1) winless streak vs. UM.
- Ohio State led 2-1 after the first period on two goals from senior Matt Johnson. The Wolverines tied the game 4:45 into the second but senior Tanner Fritz put Ohio State back ahead less than three minutes later. The Buckeyes carried the one-goal lead until late in the third when senior Darik Angeli scored for a two-goal advantage at 17:55. The Wolverines responded with an extra attacker goal 36 seconds later, but sophomore Nick Schilkey sealed the Buckeye win with an empty net goal at 19:25.
- The line of seniors Fritz and Johnson and freshman Christian Lampasso led the way offensively with three goals and five assists combined. The Buckeye defense blocked 27 shots, led by seven shot blocks from junior Craig Dalrymple, and Christian Frey made 36 saves in the Ohio State net, while Ohio State’s penalty kill was 4-for-4 and allowed just one shot on goal.
Buckeyes vs. Wolverines
- Ohio State and Michigan met for the first time in 1964 and after games in 1969-70, 1974-75 and 1978-79, have met at least once each season since 1981-82 when Michigan joined Ohio State in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
- The Wolverines lead the all-time series, 77-34-12, including 37-14-7 in Ann Arbor. Michigan won the first two games between the teams this year, with an 8-3 victory Dec. 5, 2014 in Ann Arbor and 10-6 win Jan. 16 in Columbus, before the Buckeyes posted a 5-3 win Friday in Columbus.
- In the two games against Michigan this season, junior Anthony Greco leads Ohio State with four goals vs. the Wolverines, while senior Matt Johnson has three goals and an assist for four points.
- In 13 career games vs. Michigan, Buckeye senior Tanner Fritz leads the current Buckeyes with 14 points, including five goals and a team-best nine assists. Senior Matt Johnson has five goals and three assists for eight points in 11 games vs. UM and junior Anthony Greco has scored five goals (including a hat trick earlier this season) in eight games vs. the Wolverines.
Fritz Joins Century Club
- Senior Tanner Fritz’s second-period goal Friday vs. Michigan was the 100th point of his Buckeye career. He is the 57th Buckeye with 100 or more points for the Scarlet and Gray.
- Fritz now has 32 goals, 69 assists and 101 points as a Buckeye and leads the current Buckeyes with 133 games played. He also had two assists for a three-point night vs. Michigan Friday, his fourth three-point night as a Buckeye.
- Fritz has a team-high 18 points this season with seven goals and 11 assists and is looking for his third year in a row with 20 or more points.
Noting the Offense
- Ohio State ended a streak of six-consecutive games with two goals or less with its 5-3 win over Michigan Friday. It was the team’s sixth game with five or more goals this season.
- Senior Matt Johnson scored twice Friday vs. the Wolverines and now has 12 goals on the year. It was his third multiple-goal game of the season and he added an assist for his third three-point outing this season and in his career. He has a career-high 12 goals and 17 points this season after posting 13 goals and 23 points in his first three years for the Scarlet and Gray.
- Freshman Christian Lampasso had two assists in the win Friday, the third two-assist game of his Buckeye career. He has a team-best 12 assists on the year and is fifth in scoring among Big Ten freshmen with 14 points.
- Senior defenseman Al McLean had his second assist of the season, and first since the season opener Oct. 10, Friday vs. Michigan. Sophomore forward David Gust picked up his first helper since Jan. 2 and now has a 2-3-5 line this year.
- Sophomore Nick Schilkey netted his seventh goal of the season Friday vs. Michigan. Schilkey, who had a 13-13-26 line as a freshman last year, has 16 points this season, with seven goals and nine assists. He has a point in two of three games after going a career-long four games without a point in the four games prior.
- The Buckeyes were 0-for-4 on the power play Friday and have not scored in the last three games, going scoreless on seven chances combined. In all, nine Buckeyes have hit double-digit points this season and every skater who has played in more than five games has at least one point. This year, 18 Buckeyes have scored at least one goal, 22 have at least one assist and 17 have at least one goal and one helper.
Noting The Blueline and In Goal
- Ohio State blocked 27 Michigan shots Friday, led by junior Craig Dalrymple with a career-high seven. In all, 10 Buckeyes had at least one shot block in the game vs the Wolverines.
- Ohio State is second in the NCAA, averaging 16.37 shot blocks an outing. Dalrymple leads the Buckeyes with 2.32 blocked shots a game, with senior Justin DaSilva second with 2.22. Sophomore goalie Christian Frey made 36 saves Friday vs. the Wolverines and ranks second in the Big Ten with a .910 save percentage this season. He has six games with 30 or more saves this season, including a 60-save night at Miami Oct. 18 and 53 saves at Penn State Jan. 9.
- The Buckeye penalty kill was 4-for-4 against Michigan Friday, just the second time in the last nine games the team did not allow a power play goal. On the year, the Buckeye PK is 63-for-86 (.733).
Buckeye This and That
- Ohio State is playing its only road game in a stretch of eight games. The squad had just one home game in its previous 12 outings.
- Tanner Fritz and Anthony Greco are the only Buckeyes to see action in all 27 games this season.
- Since putting 18-22 shots on goal in a three-game stretch, the Buckeyes have 32 or more in each of their last three games, including 32 vs. Michigan Friday. The squad is averaging 29.7 shots on goal a night. Michigan’s 39 shots on goal Friday ended a streak of three games in a row Ohio State held opponents to 28 goals or less. The Buckeyes are allowing 31.5 shots on goal a night.
- Nick Schilkey is the only Michigan native on the Buckeye roster, calling Marysville home.
Looking Ahead
- Ohio State will return home for back-to-back series to close its home schedule, hosting Penn State Feb. 27-28 and Minnesota March 6-7. Gametimes vs. the Nittany Lions are set for 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., while the Buckeyes and Gophers will meet at 5 p.m. in game one and 6 p.m. in game two.
- Upcoming promotions include postgame goals for kids Feb. 27 and March 6 and a postgame meet and greet Feb. 28. Feb. 28 is Youth Hockey Night. All children (eighth grade and under) wearing a youth hockey jersey will receive a free popcorn and are invited to the Ohio State lockerroom postgame for a tour and meet and greet with the team.
- Alumni Night is Feb. 28, with Ohio State men’s hockey alums recognized, and 2015 Senior Night is slated for March 7 vs. Minnesota.
