Ohio State Tops Wisconsin, 2-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State men’s hockey downed Wisconsin, 2-1, Friday in Value City Arena to open a three-game homestand. The Buckeyes (8-15-2, 3-8-0-0 B1G) and Badgers (2-19-4, 0-9-2-2 B1G) will close the weekend series at 7 p.m. Saturday in a game televised by American Sports Network. The Buckeyes trailed 1-0 after the first 20 minutes but goals from junior Tyler Lundey and sophomore Nick Schilkey in the second lifted the team to the win. Sophomore goalie Christian Frey made 22 saves in the victory.
The Badgers scored the only goal of the first period, when Kevin Schulze’s shot went off Aidan Cavallini in front and right to Corbin McGuire, who was able to score. The teams combined for 25 shots in the period, with Ohio State ahead, 15-10. The Buckeyes had the only power play.
Ohio State led 2-1 after the second. At 5:58, Lundey got to a puck deep in the Badger zone and his shot from a sharp angle went off the UW goalie’s back and in to tie the game at one. Seniors Chad Niddery and Nick Oddo assisted on the goal, Lundey’s third of the season. The Buckeyes took the lead at 18:04. Freshman Matthew Weis won a faceoff just outside the UW zone and Schilkey picked up the puck near the boards. He made a move to beat the Badger defenseman and scored on a high shot. The Buckeyes carried play in the period, outshooting Wisconsin, 17-4. The Badgers had the only power play.
The teams combined for 19 shots in the third period, with Ohio State putting 10 on net and Frey stopping all nine Badger attempts. Wisconsin pulled its goalie with 1:11 left for the extra attacker, but the Buckeyes held UW off the board. Ohio State stopped the Badgers scoreless on two power play chances and was 0-for-1 in the period.
Ohio State outshot Wisconsin, 42-23 in the game. Frey played all 60 minutes and had 22 saves for the Scarlet and Gray, improving his save percentage to .910. Joe Rumpel had 40 saves in 58:49 in net for Wisconsin.
Neither team was able to score on the power play. Ohio State was 0-for-2 and Wisconsin was 0-for-3.
Schilkey is tied for second on the team with 15 points, tying for third with six goals and nine assists. Weis has a team-best 11 assists and also has 15 points. Niddery, playing his first game after missing the last seven with injury, now has a 2-9-11 line on the season. Oddo has a point in four of the last seven games and has three goals and eight assists for 11 points on the year.
