Columbus, Ohio— Two first period goals and three power play scores for St. Cloud State were too much for the Ohio State women’s hockey team (5-9-0, 3-9-0 WCHA) to overcome in Saturday’s 4-1 loss to the Huskies (6-7-1, 4-7-1 WCHA).
Whereas Friday’s game featured a quick Buckeye goal, the first goal of this game was scored by St. Cloud State at the 2:29 mark. Julia Tylke scored on the power play after an Ohio State interference penalty just 1:16 into the game. Alexandra Makaric made it two power play goals on two chances towards the end of the period, converting with the man advantage at the 16:14 mark to put her team up 2-0. A Buckeye slashing penalty was the culprit this time around, the second of four penalties they committed in the first period.
Early in the second period the Scarlet and Gray would get on the board with a power play goal of their own. Cara Zubko found the back of the net just eight seconds after the Huskies committed an interference penalty for her fourth goal of the season. Alexa Ranahan and Claudia Kepler added the assists on the play that cut Ohio State’s deficit to one. The second period was the best of the day for the Buckeyes; they outshot St. Cloud State 15-9 and scored the frame’s only goal, while also thwarting both Husky power play opportunities.
The third period, unfortunately, mirrored the first in terms of offensive output. The Huskies got on the board with their third power play goal at the 3:12 mark after Ohio State was whistled for roughing 45 second prior. St. Cloud’s Brittany Anderson would score the game’s only even strength goal 10:42 into the period to put her team up 4-1 and notch her third point of the game. 4-1 would hold as the final score as the Huskies completed the sweep on their home ice.
Despite the two losses, Ohio State was not lacking offensive chances. It outshot its WCHA counterpart by 15 over the course of the weekend, 60-45, and saw 11 power play shots to the Huskies’ nine. Individually, Ranahan, Kepler, and Kendall Curtis recorded multi-point weekends for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State will look to bounce back next weekend at the Windjammer Classic; it’ll face hosts Vermont as well as Boston University.
