Columbus, Ohio— Coming off of yesterday’s big win, Ohio State (5-7-0, 3-7-0 WCHA) dropped the second game of its weekend series against North Dakota (10-3-2, 5-3-2-1 WCHA) 4-1.
North Dakota struck first, scoring 6:04 into the game on its second power play opportunity. A Buckeye hooking penalty paved the way for Halli Krzyzaniak to find the back of the net with the man advantage. Another goal would come towards the end of the period; Amy Menke notched a goal for the second time this weekend at the 18:12 mark to put North Dakota ahead 2-0. Meghan Dufault also recorded her second assist of the period on that play. Though the numbers were different it was a similar story to Saturday’s game: the first period was all North Dakota. The Buckeyes were outshot 12-3 in the game today and 32-7 in opening frames this weekend.
Whereas yesterday Ohio State was able to come back and swing momentum to its side a little bit in the second period, today it was still North Dakota’s game after two frames. Vilma Tanskanen scored the only goal of the second period at the 6:45 mark to put her team ahead 3-0, and overall the Buckeyes were outshot again, this time 13-4.
Maddy Field would score her fifth goal of the season and second of the weekend 6:11 into the third period to cut the deficit to 3-1, receiving an assist from Cara Zubko. This was the second weekend this season in which Field scored a goal in each game, the other coming in the season-opening series against Lindenwood, after which the freshman won WCHA Rookie of the Week honors. North Dakota would get that goal back, however, at the 12:01 mark when Menke scored her second goal of the game to put North Dakota up 4-1. That last goal also came on the power play, UND’s second 5-on-4 goal of the game.
4-1 would hold as the final score, sending Ohio State back to Columbus with a series split. The Buckeyes were outshot 33-13 in Sunday’s loss, including a 25-7 shot differential after two periods.
Ohio State will look to bounce back next weekend when it travels to take on St. Cloud State on Nov. 20-21.
