TULSA, Okla. – The Buckeyes kept rolling on Thursday at the ITA All-American Championship as Hugo Di Feo and Chris Diaz advanced in the singles draw and both Buckeye doubles teams also moved into the second round.
For Di Feo, the win Thursday was his fourth-straight this week as he made his way into the main draw through qualifying. Today, he took on No. 33 Diego Hidalgo of Florida. Di Feo won the opening set with little trouble 6-2 but in the second, the two players traded breaks. The Buckeye sophomore got the last break however and won the set and the match 7-5. He will face Denver’s Diogo Rocha who is ranked No. 75 in the preseason rankings.
Senior Chris Diaz is the highest ranked Buckeye this fall at No. 29 and Thursday was his first singles action of the week. He faced Virginia Tech’s Edoardo Tessaro who, like Di Feo, made his way into the main draw through qualifying. Tessaro looked like he would continue to ride his hot streak as he won the first set 6-2 and had double match point in the second leading 5-3. But Diaz bounced-back to win a remarkable 19-straight points to win the second set 7-5 and grab an early lead in the third. With Diaz leading 3-0 in the third set, Tessaro was forced to retire with an apparent injury. Diaz moves on to take on No. 21 Or Ram-Harel of host Tulsa on Friday.
Sophomore Mikael Torpegaard made his singles debut on Thursday as well but he fell 6-4, 7-6 (5) to No. 14 Ronnie Schneider of North Carolina in the opening round. Torpegaard didn’t have to wait long for another chance as he joined doubles partner Herkko Pollanen to take on No. 4-seed Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim of Wake Forest later in the afternoon. The Ohio State duo, who also advanced through qualifying, controlled the match throughout and would go on to a 7-5, 6-4 victory. This was Torpegaard and Pollanen’s best win together as Mansouri and Seraphim are ranked No. 5 in the preseason rankings.
The other Buckeye doubles team of junior Ralf Steinbach and freshman Martin Joyce also got off to a great start as they rolled past No. 20 Roberto Cid and Justin Roberts of South Florida 6-4, 6-4. They advance to face Georgia’s top-seeded and No. 1 ranked team of Austin Smith and Ben Wagland. Torpegaard and Pollanen will take on
Live scoring as well as live video will be available for the remaining singles and doubles main draw matches via Tulsa’s live streaming site.
