Ohio State Defeats Minnesota State, 5-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio– Head Coach Jenny Potter earned her first home win as the bench boss at Ohio State, leading her team to a 5-3 victory on Friday night at the Schottenstein Center.
After facing No. 1 and No. 2-ranked teams in the country the last two weekends, the Buckeyes welcomed the Mavericks to Columbus. After one period though, Minnesota State led 2-1. The Buckeyes fell behind 2-0 after just 10 minutes of play before Maddy Field scored her third goal of the season to cut the deficit in half. Katie Matheny and Breanne Grant both assisted on the Ohio State goal, the second helper of the season for each player.
Cara Zubko tied the game up at 2-2 almost seven minutes into the second period with a power play goal, receiving assists from Alexa Ranahan and Claudia Kepler. Ohio State would take the lead a few minutes later, with Kepler scoring the goal this time and Kendall Curtis and Lauren Boyle dishing out the assists. The goal gave the Buckeyes their first lead since opening weekend against Lindenwood.
That initial lead didn’t last long, however. After getting called for too many men on the ice, Minnesota State’s Hannah Davidson scored a shorthanded goal after a turnover right in front of Ohio State’s net that tied the game up at 3-3. Less than a minute later, Kepler would finish off a great play that started with some fancy moves near center ice by Dani Sadek, who would eventually find her teammate for the game-winning power play goal. Kendall Curtis would score 90 seconds later to add an insurance goal in what would end up being a 5-3 win for the Buckeyes.
The five goals marks a season-high for the Scarlet and Gray. It didn’t hurt that they outshot their WCHA foes to the tune of 35 to 12, with Kepler and Curtis accounting for 15 of those. Curtis also had a great night in the faceoff circle, winning 10 of her 13 opportunities.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow, Saturday, at the Schottenstein Center at 1:07.
