Columbus, Ohio— The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team lost to No. 1 Minnesota on Saturday afternoon by a score of 11-2.
The Golden Gophers struck first, scoring four minutes into the game to take an early lead. The goal was scored by Dani Cameranesi, her third of the weekend. Minnesota would score two more times in the period to give itself an early three-goal lead. The Buckeyes, though, would score in the waning seconds of a period for the third time this weekend to cut their deficit to two, 3-1. Julianna Iafallo scored on the power play to give her team a boost heading into intermission. Alexa Ranahan and Dani Sadek both assisted on the goal, giving Sadek two helpers for the series.
The second period, however, was all Minnesota. When it was all said and done the Gophers ended up with six goals in the period, including two power play scores. The first two goals came in the first 1:55 of the period, giving the no. 1-ranked team in the country a four-goal lead. The first goal of the period and the last were scored on the power play, the last coming with less than a minute to go in the period.
Minnesota’s Hannah Brandt opened up the third period with a goal to give her team 10 on the day, and to give herself a hat trick as well. The Gophers would add one more at the 10:11 mark to bring their total to 11 on the afternoon. Ohio State’s Claudia Kepler fired a wrist shot on the Buckeyes’ fourth power play of the game that found the back of the net, her second goal of the weekend. Lauren Boyle and Cara Zubko both added assists on the play.
Next weekend the Scarlet and Gray will host Minnesota State at the Schottenstein Center. Friday’s game will be at 6:07 ET and Saturday’s puck drop is slated for 1:07 ET.
