Columbus, Ohio — The Buckeyes (2-3-0, 0-3-0 WCHA) made their home debut on Friday night against No. 1 Minnesota (5-0-0, 3-0-0 WCHA) and fell by a score of 7-2.
Minnesota struck first with a power play goal late in the first period to go up 1-0. Prior to that, both teams earned a fair amount of scoring chances, with Stacy Danczak making some great saves between the pipes. The Buckeyes were eventually rewarded with their play with a late goal from Cara Zubko to tie the game up at 1-1 with just 11 seconds to go in the period. Lauren Spring and Dani Sadek assisted on Zubko’s goal.
After the intermission the Golden Gophers came out firing, to the tune of four second period goals to take a commanding 5-1 lead. Goals one and two came not even 90 seconds apart, while goals three and four were both scored by Dani Cameranesi. Alex LaMere came in to relieve Danczak after Cameranesi’s second goal of the period.
In the third, Minnesota would dent the back of the net two more times to reach its total of seven on the night. Ohio State, however, faught until the final whistle, as evidenced by Claudia Kepler’s goal with just one second remaining on the clock. Kepler’s goal was the final score of the night and capped off the 7-2 Buckeye defeat. Dana Rasmussen and Julie McKinnon both added assists on Kepler’s goal.
Ohio State will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon for its second game against Minnesota, with puck drop slated for 2:07.
