COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the third year in a row, the Ohio State synchronized swimming team hosted their Sync Cancer event which raised money to benefit cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.
Over 80 participants came out to the event Sunday morning at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on campus. More than half of the participants got in the pool and swam a mile as others cheered and pledged money for laps swam. The swim-a-thon has raised $15,500 over the past three years.
“We are so grateful to be able to use our sport as an avenue for others to participate in the Pelotonia efforts,” said head coach Holly Vargo Brown. “It was a morning of fun and hopeful, positive energy and I’m very sure that Emily was smiling down on us all today.”
The event was inspired by Buckeye alum Emily Marsh Fleming’s battle with cancer and together with Emily, the team decided to put its own spin on the peloton with participants swimming a mile in the pool. Marsh Fleming was very involved in the Team Buckeye Peloton as she rode in the event three times. Before her passing in March of 2014, she played a big role in helping setup the swim-a-thon as a way of paying-it-forward.
Scott Fleming, Emily Marsh Fleming’s husband, spoke to the group before the swim and thanked them for their support. Emily Smith, a graduate researcher in biological sciences and a Pelotonia funded researcher, also spoke to the participants about how their support specifically helps fund cancer research.
