BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — The Ohio State men’s hockey team suffered a 2-0 loss to No. 16-ranked Bowling Green Saturday in BGSU Ice Arena. The win gives the Falcons, who scored both goals in the third period, a sweep of the season-opening series. Junior goalie Matt Tomkins had 28 saves in the net for the Buckeyes.
“Overall I thought we played a much better game tonight, especially in the first period,” Steve Rohlik, Ohio State head coach, said. “Our guys competed a lot harder and we did a lot of good things. There was a bad break there at the end with a deflection that went in, but you have to capitalize on your opportunities and we didn’t do that on the power play late in the third period. You have to score to win a hockey game and we weren’t able to do that tonight.”
Ohio State returns to action with a home-and-home series vs. Miami next weekend. The teams will meet at 7:05 p.m. Friday in Value City Arena in Columbus and at 8:05 p.m. Saturday in Oxford, Ohio.
The teams were scoreless through the first two periods. Ohio State outshot the Falcons, 12-8, in the opening period before Bowling Green had the edge in the second, 11-5.
In the third, the Falcons got on the board at 10:05 on Mark Cooper’s goal, as he skated in the zone after picking up the puck in the neutral zone. With 8:26 remaining in regulation and trailing 1-0, the Buckeyes went on a power play and a second Falcon penalty gave Ohio State a 5-on-3 for 31 seconds, but could not convert. At 17:50 Mark Pohlkamp scored on a 3-on-1, putting the Falcons up 2-0. Ohio State skated with the net empty for the final two minutes but Bowling Green was able to close out the shutout.
For the game, the Buckeyes were scoreless on six power play chances and the penalty kill stopped all three Bowling Green chances. The PK was 5-for-5 in the series.
Ohio State was outshot, 30-25, in the game. Tomkins played 57:54 and had 28 saves for the Buckeyes. Chris Nell stopped all 25 shots he faced in 59:46 for the Falcons.
Ohio State blocked 14 Bowling Green shot attempts, led by junior defenseman Josh Healey with three. Junior Nick Schilkey and senior Anthony Greco led the Buckeyes with seven shots each.
