Open it Up
Ohio State’s exhibition is the first for a Big Ten team this year, as Saturday also marks the first official day of practice for the majority of Division I college hockey teams. The Buckeyes have been holding captains practices, working with the strength and conditioning staff and going on the ice with the coaches for a limited number of hours each week.
Break it Down
The Buckeyes’ roster for this season includes 27 players, with 10 freshmen, seven sophomores, seven juniors and three seniors. There are three goalies, eight defensemen and 16 forwards. Seventeen letterwinners return from 2014-15 (nine forwards, five defensemen, three goalies).
The players hail from four countries (United States, Canada, Germany and Sweden), from 10 states and two provinces. Five Buckeyes call Alberta home, ranking first on the squad, followed by four players from Minnesota and three from Ohio, Michigan and New York. Buckeyes also hail from Indiana, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Texas, Wisconsin and Ontario.
Wearing the C
Seniors Craig Dalrymple and Anthony Greco and junior Nick Schilkey have been named team captains for the 2015-16 Ohio State men’s hockey team. In addition, Greco and Schilkey both have been recognized Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch by the conference coaches.
Greco, a forward who hails from Queens, N.Y., was an honorable mention All-Big Ten choice in 2015 after leading the Buckeyes with a career-high 15 goals, ranking second on the squad with 23 points. He has played in 89 games for the Scarlet and Gray, with 25 goals, 24 assists and 49 points. He has earned Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten accolades.
Schilkey, a forward who calls Marysville, Mich., home, skated in 31 games a season ago and had 10 goals, 12 assists and 22 points. He has played in 70 games through his first two seasons with the squad and had 48 points, with 23 goals and 25 assists. He is a two-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and an Academic All-Big Ten choice.
Dalrymple, a defenseman from Kippen, Ontario, played in 28 games a season ago and had two goals and five assists for seven points, along with 52 blocked shots. He has skated in 82 games as a Buckeye, with five goals, 25 assists and 30 points, blocking 122 shots. A 2015 Bucks Go Pro intern, he is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten choice and a three-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete.
Behind the Bench
Steve Rohlik is in his third year as the Buckeyes’ head coach and in his sixth year on the Ohio State staff. Mark Strobel joined the staff over the summer as the associate head coach and Joe Exter is in his fifth year as an assistant coach with the program.
