Metka and Steinbach improve to 12-3 in doubles play this season
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 5 Ohio State men’s tennis took down No. 39 Auburn 4-0 on Saturday to advance to the championship of the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Columbus. The Buckeyes will face either Tulsa or Purdue on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the OSU Varsity Tennis Center.
Ohio State is now 5-0 on the year while Auburn drops its first match and is now 2-1.
The Buckeyes wasted little time winning the doubles point as the No. 4 ranked team of Kevin Metka and Ralf Steinbach roared to a 6-1 victory in the No. 1 doubles match. The Buckeye duo is now 12-3 on the season.
Chris Diaz and Hunter Callahan enjoyed similar success as they took down Maxime Hinnisdaels and Joseph Van Dooren 6-2 at No. 2 doubles to claim the point. Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen were leading 5-2 when doubles ended.
Metka got the Buckeyes started in singles with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Oliver Plaskett in the No. 6 spot. The senior All-American is now 6-2 in singles play this season.
Steinbach also picked-up a straight-set victory over Marko Krickovic at No. 3 singles, winning 6-3, 6-3. Pollanen then secured the win for the Buckeyes with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Joseph Can Dooren in the No. 4 singles match.
Diaz dropped the first set to No. 38 Lukas Ollert 7-5 but rebounded to win the second 6-4. Torpegaard also lost the first but gained some momentum with a 6-4 victory in the second and was leading 3-1 in the third when the match was clinched.
In the No. 5 singles match, Callahan raced-out to a 5-1 lead in the first but Dante Saleh battled back to force a tie-break. Callahan went on to win the tie-break 7-2 and was leading 5-4 in the second set.
