Athlete of the Week
Ezekiel Elliott, football
- Elliott was the offensive MVP and ran for 246 yards and four touchdowns on 36 carries to lead Ohio State to a win over Oregon in the College Football Playoff National Championship game. With his career-high rushing total, Elliott moved into second place on Ohio State’s all-time single-season rushing list with 1,878 yards. He passed Archie Griffin (1,695 in 1974) and Keith Byars (1,764 in 1984).
No. 1 Football (14-1, 8-0 B1G)
- Ohio State captured its eighth national title in program history and the first since the 2002 season with a 42-20 win over No. 2 Oregon in the first CFP National Championship game Monday night at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas. Behind their bullish backup quarterback, Cardale Jones, and the relentless running of Elliott, the Buckeyes completed a remarkable in-season turnaround with a dominating performance against the Ducks (13-2).
Men’s Basketball (14-5, 3-3 B1G)
- D’Angelo Russell scored 21 points, Sam Thompson added 12 and Ohio State defeated Michigan 71-52 on Tuesday.
- Russell, a freshman guard from Louisville, Ky., followed by his performance vs. Michigan by recording the first double-double of his career with 27 points and 14 rebounds at Iowa on Saturday.
No. 5 Men’s Tennis (2-0)
- The men’s tennis team kicked off the 2015 season with a pair of sweeps inside the confines of the Varsity Tennis Center on Sunday. Ohio State knocked-off Northern Kentucky 7-0 in the first match and then dispatched of Youngstown State 7-0 in the night cap.
Women’s Basketball (12-7, 4-3 B1G)
- Ohio State got 21 points from freshman Kelsey Mitchell and a double-double from fellow freshman Alexa Hart to outlast Penn State 69-60 on Sunday afternoon at Value City Arena.
No. 9 Men’s Swimming & Diving
- The men’s swimming and diving team was back in action vs. Denison Friday evening, earning its sixth dual-meet victory of the season.
- Downing the Big Red by a score of 189-111, the Buckeyes made the most of their trek to Granville, Ohio, as senior diver Stephen Ettienne and freshman swimmer Brayden Seal both achieved site records.
Women’s Swimming & Diving
- The women’s swimming and diving team returned to competition in dominating fashion Friday evening, posting a 201.5-93.5 win over the Toledo Rockets in Toledo, Ohio.
- In all, Ohio State swimming recorded the fastest time in each race, while diving standout Taylor Ford notched wins in both the 1- and 3-meter events.
No. 14 Men’s Volleyball (4-2)
- The men’s volleyball team ripped 15 service aces, tied for the second most in school history, to sink Limestone College (1-4) in four sets (25-16, 22-25, 25-9, 25-17).
- Nicolas Szerszen, a true freshman, stuffed the stat sheet with 16 kills, a .750 attacking percentage (16-1-20), nine digs and four aces; all career highs for the dynamic outside hitter.
No. 4 Wrestling (7-3, 2-1 B1G)
- The wrestling team won six of 10 matches, including four by bonus points, to secure a 25-13 victory over Michigan State Friday evening at Jenison Field House in East Lansing.
- The Buckeyes followed it up with a 25-15 victory over No. 16 Michigan Sunday in front of a sellout crowd at Cliff Keen Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Track & Field
- Several members of the track and field team competed at the Auburn Indoor Invitational in Birmingham, Ala., Saturday afternoon.
- A pair of runner-up finishes highlighted the men’s effort in Birmingham. Redshirt sophomore Donovan Robertson was edged in a photo finish in the 60-meter hurdles, crossing the line in a time of 7.897, while freshman Zack Bazile used a jump of 7.22 meters (23.825) to take the second position in the long jump.
No. 15 Women’s Gymnastics
- The women’s gymnastics team tallied a 195.025 in a tri-meet with No. 5 Michigan and West Virginia Saturday afternoon at St. John Arena. The Wolverines won the meet with a 196.975, while the Buckeyes finished second.
