FORT WORTH, Texas – The Ohio State rifle team fired a 4,664, its highest score of the season in a win over Air Force (4662) and Coast Guard (4432) on Sunday. The 4,664 was only two points shy of the team record which was fired exactly one year ago at a match in Fairbanks.
In smallbore, the Buckeyes set a new team record with a score of 2,318. For the second match in a row sophomore Deanna Binnie fired a 583 and led the way for Ohio State. Junior Remington Lyman fired a 580 followed closely by the freshman trio of Mark Matheny (578), Drew Cheezum (577) and Josh Black (573).
In air rifle, Ohio State fired a 2,346 led by freshman Mark Matheny who fired a 590 for the second time this season. Right behind him was fellow freshman Josh Black who fired a 589 and Lyman (586). Sophomore Chrissy Thomas (581) and Cheezum (580) rounded out team scoring for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State head coach Ryan Tanoue was pleased with the performance.
“Overall I thought it was a great team effort by our group on Sunday. We have been performing consistently, but not quite up to the level we know that we’re capable of so to post our best score as we head down the home stretch of the season is a very satisfying feeling. I hope that this performance will serve as the catalyst for the remainder of our season both as a benchmark for our performances moving forward but also for our confidence and mindset as we work toward the NCAA Qualifier next month.”
Ohio State heads to West Point, NY to take on Army on Saturday, January 24th at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.
