WEST POINT, N.Y. – For the second weekend in a row, the Ohio State rifle team posted a season high score. The team bested their season-high by one point, firing a 4,665 against Army (4611) and TCU (4694) on Saturday in West Point.
Several season best performances contributed to the new team-high. In smallbore, the Buckeyes fired a 2317, just one point shy of the team best 2318 fired last week. Leading the way was sophomore Deanna Binnie who fired a 581. Right behind Binnie were freshman Mark Matheny who fired a 580 and junior Remington Lyman who fired a 579. Freshman Josh Black fired a season best 577 while fellow freshman Drew Cheezum fired a 574 to round out team scoring for Ohio State.
In air rifle, Ohio State fired a 2348, one point off of their season-high score of 2349 fired at home against WVU. Leading the way was a season and personal best performance by freshman Drew Cheezum who fired a 591. Junior Remington Lyman fired a 590, his highest air rifle score of the season followed by Matheny (584), Black (583) and sophomore Chrissy Thomas (580). Firing as an individual, Deanna Binnie shot her best score of the season with a 586.
“Our team had another day of top to bottom solid performances at Army on Saturday,” said head coach Ryan Tanoue. “It was a great accomplishment for the team to be able to string together two season best performances back to back on the road. We are coming down the home stretch of the season and for our team to be performing at a season best level as well as having individual best performances is a great reward for the team’s perseverance and hard work. Also, with our score at Army we raised our NCAA qualification score average to a 4,661 which is the highest it has ever been for our program. At this point in the season we are focused on taking things one day at a time and our next target is our last regular season home match this Sunday.”
Ohio State returns to action at the Hugh W. Wylie Range Sunday against Kentucky, NC State and Coast Guard.
