OXFORD, Ohio – It was a quick night for Ohio State Women’s Volleyball, getting past UAB in a sweep lasting just 77 minutes (25-17, 25-22, 25-16). The Buckeyes improve to 7-3 on the season, winners in six of their last seven contests.
Ohio State swung at a .286 clip while limiting the blazers to an attacking efficiency of .193, thanks in large part to a six-block effort from the Scarlet & Gray. Erin Sekinger and Katie Mitchell each assaulted UAB from the pins, combining for 21 kills. Sekinger paced the team in both kills (11) and blocks (3). Ohio State aced the Blazers a half dozen times, getting a pair each from Mitchell, Valeria León and Luisa Schirmer.
The first and third sets were all Ohio State, bookending a hard-fought victory in the second stanza. After giving away the very first point of the match on an attack error, the Buckeyes never trailed again in the opening set en route to a 25-17 winner. Ohio State held UAB to a sub-.100 hitting percentage and capped it off with a three-point run.
Set number two was a different story, however, as the Blazers reached the 15-point mark first at 15-14. UAB would grasp a momentary edge again at 20-19 before seeing it disappear for good following a four-point spurt by Ohio State. Sekinger sealed the deal with a kill from setter Taylor Sherwin for the 25th and final tally.
It was back to Buckeye dominance in the third frame as Ohio State led the entire way. A combined seven kills on 14 errorless swings from the Sekinger-Mitchell duo powered OSU to a .387 hitting efficiency and 25-16 final ledger.
Ohio State has a double dip of action on Saturday, taking on IUPUI in the morning at 10 a.m. before a nightcap against the host RedHawks of Miami University at 7 p.m.
