No. 1 Ohio State Places Three Crews in A/B Semifinals – Ohio State Buckeyes

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The No. 1 Ohio State rowing team placed all three of its crews in the A/B Semifinals Friday during the first day of competition at the 2014 NCAA Championships at Eagle Creek Park. The first and second varsity eight crews advanced after earning first-place finishes in their respective heats, while the first varsity four advanced after claiming the top spot in Repechage 1.
The Top 2 crews from each heat automatically advanced to the A/B Semifinals, which begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The remaining teams rowed in repechage races Friday afternoon with the Top 2 crews in each repechage securing placements in the A/B semifinals and the remaining crews securing placements in the C/D semifinals.
The first varsity eight of Aina Cid Centelles, Elodie Ravera, Eelkje Miedema, Ashley Bauer, Stephanie Williams, Catherine Shields, Holly Norton, Claire-Louise Bode and coxswain Victoria Lazur opened the day of racing for the Buckeyes, remaining perfect on the season (10-0) with a first-place finish in the first heat of varsity eight competition. Ohio State sounded the horn in 6:18.26 to finish ahead of Michigan (6:22.10), USC (6:26.17), San Diego (6:31.69) and Louisville (6:31.78).
Next, the second varsity eight of Daphne Socha, Chloe Meyer, Nicole Becks, Lauren Eckles, Meghan Birkbeck, Anne Dietrich, Katie King, Taylore Urban and coxswain Sami Jurofsky claimed the second first-place finish of the day for the Buckeyes, crossing the line in 6:27.70. The crew defeated California (6:33.10), Harvard-Radcliffe (6:38.41), Indiana (6:47.14), Northeastern (7:06.80) and Jacksonville (7:37.97).
The first varsity four closed the day, advancing to the A/B Semifinals after placing first in Repechage 1. Sarah Kessler, Anna Ralph, Anna Gackowski, Katie Beletskaya and coxswain Sarah Asad claimed first-place with a time of 7:16.71, beating Michigan (7:20.47), Washington State (7:27.21), Louisville (7:33.01), San Diego (7:34.05), Harvard-Radcliffe (7:38.73) and Massachusetts (7:42.86) to the line.
