COLUMBUS, Ohio – The defending national champion and No. 1 Ohio State rowing team opens the 2014 season against No. 12 Michigan Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River. The race marks the first of seven regattas for the Buckeyes this spring, and their only home event this season.

IN THE RANKINGS
Ohio State opens the season ranked No. 1 in the first CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll of the year. With their top rankings, the Buckeyes are currently the highest ranked Big Ten team followed by No. 12 Michigan, and No. 15 Wisconsin. Michigan State and Minnesota are also in the mix, both having received votes toward the rankings.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN
The Wolverines enter competition Saturday as the second-highest ranked Big Ten team at No. 12. The race marks the first competition of the season for Michigan, which returns 16 of 23 rowers from its first varsity eight, second varsity eight and first varsity four that finished 12th overall at the 2013 NCAA Championships.
NEW FACES
Madeline Davis joined the Buckeye coaching staff as an assistant coach in July 2013 after spending three seasons as the assistant lightweight women’s rowing coach at Stanford University. At Stanford, Davis assisted the Cardinal lightweight eight to three consecutive national championships, including a national title at the 2013 IRA National Championships.
Davis was a four-year varsity letterwinner, three-year member of the lightweight varsity eight and an Eastern Sprints and IRA Champion at Princeton.
A former Ohio State student-athlete (2009-12), Claudia Herpertz returned to her alma mater in the fall of 2013 as a Graduate Assistant after serving as an Assistant Coach for the Three Rivers Rowing Association (2012-13). Throughout her career at Ohio State, Herpertz earned Second Team All-Big Ten (2010), CRCA National Scholar Athlete (2010-12) and OSU Scholar-Athlete (2010-12) honors. She is currently working on a master’s degree in sport management at Ohio State.
UNDEFEATED RECORD
Ohio State’s second varsity eight will look to continue its regular season undefeated streak dating back to the 2012 campaign (9-0). The Buckeyes ended the 2013 regular season with a perfect 8-0 record, compiling a 17-0 overall record in regular season competition dating back to March 24, 2012.
In addition, the second varsity eight claimed both an NCAA Championship and a Big Ten Championship last year to end the 2013 season with a perfect 12-0 overall record.
2013 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS
Ohio State made program history at the 2013 NCAA Championships, winning its first national team title with 126 points after earning first-place finishes in the first varsity four and second varsity eight and a third-place finish in the first varsity eight. With the win, the Buckeyes became the first Big Ten team to win a national team title in rowing, and the first women’s team at Ohio State to claim an NCAA Championship.
The first varsity four (Taylore Urban, Sara Handa, Chloe Meyer, Aina Cid-Centelles and coxswain Dara Schnoll) claimed its second consecutive national title, while the second varsity eight (Daphne Socha, Katie Beletskaya, Silvia DeMatteis, Stephanie Johnson, Nicole Becks, Lauren Eckles, Samantha Fowle, Catherine Shields and coxswain Amanda Poll) claimed its first.
2013 BIG TEN CHAMPIONS
The Buckeyes captured their fourth Big Ten Championship in 2013, earning a championship record 160 points in the process. Five Ohio State crews claimed gold medals at the regatta as the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four, third varsity four and first novice eight all tallied first-place finishes.
Five Buckeyes earned All-Big Ten honors at the conclusion of the championships, as Claire-Louise Bode, Allison Elber and Eelkje Miedema were named First Team All-Big Ten and Cori Meinert and Holly Norton were named Second Team All-Big Ten. Chloe Meyer was named the Ohio State Sportsmanship Award honoree.
UP NEXT
The Buckeyes travel to Corvallis, Ore., April 5 to compete against No. 13 Stanford and Oregon State in the Oregon State Classic.
