Athletes of the Week
Cardale Jones, football
- Jones threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns, and was named MVP in his first career start as No. 6 Ohio State demolished 11th-ranked Wisconsin, 59-0, Saturday night in the Big Ten championship game in Indianapolis.
Lindsey Clary, women’s swimming
- Clary won a U.S. national title in the 400 individual medley Friday at the 2014 AT&T Winter National Championships in Greensboro, N.C. Clary posted a personal-best time of 4:09.87 for a first-place finish, finishing five seconds under her previous fastest-recorded time as a Buckeye.
Football (12-1, 8-0 B1G)
- The fourth-ranked Buckeyes will face No. 1 Alabama in the 2015 Allstate Sugar Bowl New Year’s Day in New Orleans, a semifinal game of the inaugural College Football Playoff.
- Ohio State earned its first outright Big Ten title since 2009 with its whitewashing of the Badgers in the B1G title game. OSU handed UW its first shutout since August 1997 and held Melvin Gordon, the nation’s leading rusher, to 76 yards on the ground.
Women’s Volleyball (23-11, 12-8 B1G)
- No. 18 Ohio State defeated No. 13 Kentucky (27-6) in four sets (23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-19) in the second round of the NCAA tournament Saturday in Lexington, Ky., to advance to the Sweet 16. The Buckeyes will face second-ranked Wisconsin (30-2) on Friday, Dec. 12 in Louisville, Ky., at the KFC Yum! Center.
- In first round action, OSU swept Lipscomb in three sets (25-20, 25-14, 25-18). Taylor Sandbothe and Taylor Sherwin each set new career highs with 10 and six blocks, respectively.
Men’s Basketball (6-1)
- D’Angelo Russell scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half and Marc Loving added 17 points to lead No. 14 Ohio State to a 70-50 victory over Colgate Saturday afternoon at Value City Arena.
Wrestling (4-1)
- Logan Stieber won the 141-pound title, picking up his 100th career victory in the championship match, to highlight Ohio State’s efforts at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas Saturday. Stieber capped off a 5-0 weekend with two major decisions, running his season record to 10-0 and career mark to 100-3.
- In the team standings, Ohio State finished second overall in a field that featured 11 ranked teams. The Buckeyes compiled 120 points, behind only top-ranked Minnesota. Virginia Tech was third with 110 points.
Women’s Basketball (5-4)
- Freshman Kelsey Mitchell scored 26 points and Ohio State held Winthrop to just 25 points in the second half as the Buckeyes got back on track with a 66-52 victory Sunday afternoon at Value City Arena.
Men’s/Women’s Swimming
- Fourteen standouts from the Ohio State men’s and women’s swimming programs suited up at the 2014 AT&T Winter National Championships in Greensboro, N.C.
- Along with Clary’s national title in the 400 individual medley, Ohio State also claimed a national championship in the men’s 400 freestyle relay. Josh Fleagle, Mike DiSalle, Matt McHugh and Steffen Hillmer combined for a winning time of 2:53.04.
