POSTGAME QUOTES
No. 12 Ohio State 97 (7-1), High Point 43 (6-3)
?December 10, 2014?
Value City Arena – Columbus, Ohio?
Attendance: 13, 012
Scott Cherry, High Point head coach ?
On missed opportunities vs. the Buckeyes?
“We missed five layups, two wide open threes, and two free throws in the first half, including two threes from two guys on our team who are high level three-point shooters, so we basically gave away 12 points. If you make those shots and go into halftime down 7, 8, 9 points and it becomes manageable.”
On High Point’s depth?
“John Brown was out with a couple fouls. When your best player goes out early like that it puts a challenge on our team when we don’t have guys like him coming off the bench.”
On playing Ohio State?
“Against a team like this, you need to play a perfect game and we didn’t play anywhere near perfect.”
Thad Matta, Ohio State head coach
On the team’s performance in the game
“We really challenged this basketball team. I was really pleased with what I saw. When we kept things simple, we were really effective. Probably the biggest thing we did tonight was that we kept defending through the shot clock.”
On Kam Williams’ career-high performance vs. the Panthers
“He obviously had a hot hand tonight. I think he only hit the rim once or twice. He did a great job adjusting when they tried to run him off the line. He had a lot of really great shots. I think he has done a great job of understanding his role and what he needs to do on the court.”
Kam Williams, redshirt freshman guard
On scoring a career-high 23 points vs. the Panthers
“The shots that I was making today, I practice every day. The key is when you’re practicing take game time reps so when the game time comes it’s a lot easier.”
On his improvement since last season
“I just watched a lot of film and got in the gym and worked on all the areas we need to improve on, which was shooting. Being the scorer and shooter, this year I just wanted to come in and play my role and that’s for me to make shots and just bring energy whenever I come into the game. That’s the biggest key. If everybody on our team does their job and brings energy, we’re going to be a heck of a basketball team.”
Jae’Sean Tate, freshman forward
On opportunities for the freshman players
“From the game standpoint, we’re just having fun out there. This is a dream for all of us to play at the next level.”
On his stretch of rebounds and steals vs. High Point
“When I’m out there, it’s just effort. Coach can’t stress that enough. Give it 100 percent. I was just out there playing basketball. I was out there smiling, and it was just fun.”
