COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior setter Taylor Sherwin navigated the Buckeye offensive attack to the tune of a .312 attacking efficiency Wednesday night versus Iowa, powering #20 Ohio State to a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 28-26, 25-19) over the Hawkeyes (13-15, 5-12). Sherwin averaged nearly 16 assists per set, racking up 47 helpers on the night as OSU improved to 19-10 overall and 10-7 in conference tilts.
Behind the steering of Sherwin, Ohio State accumulated 53 kills with no less than 16 coming in each individual set and a whopping 20 kills finding paydirt in the second stanza.
Andrea Kacsits was virtually flawless on the attack, blistering the lumber for kills on each of her first eight swings before finally sending one wide on attempt number nine. She ended the evening with a hitting percentage of .778 (8-1-9). Outside hitters Elizabeth Campbell and Erin Sekinger reached double-digit kills totals with 12 and 10 put-aways, respectively. Almost everyone got in on the action as Taylor Sandbothe drilled nine kills at a.316 rate and the duo of Katie Mitchell and Luisa Schirmer each pounded six kills. Schirmer’s half-dozen all came in an electrifying third set.
The Buckeyes stymied Iowa to a .184 hitting efficiency, digging up 43 balls and stiffening for six blocks. Valeria León led the squad with 10 digs while Sandbothe’s four block assists were tops.
Shots were exchanged in the opening set as the lead jumped sides four times. The final lead shift came on a kill from Sekinger giving OSU the 10-9 edge. It ignited a 5-0 run for the Buckeyes en route to a 25-20 victorious tally.
Ohio State’s 20-kill effort in set number two was fulfilled by five different Buckeyes contributing three or more and 19 Sherwin assists. The Buckeyes were on top for most of the frame before a late Hawkeye surge pulled even at 24-24. Huge blocks from Ohio State handed the Buckeyes two set points, both of which were denied by the feisty Hawkeyes, however. Back-to-back kills from Taylor Sandbothe, including an obliterated free ball on set point, finally put the set to rest and gave Ohio State a 28-26 triumph.
Ohio State never trailed in the third and final frame, rolling to a 25-19 clincher. It was the Schirmer Show as the freshman from New York put a charge into six kills.
The second-ranked Badgers of Wisconsin come to town on Friday night. Ohio State hosts the Badgers in a 7 p.m. ET contest at St. John Arena.
